Anyone have any input on this? Reviews don't seem very good, but not sure if the $17 price tag makes it worth the risk to try.

Works fine for me on Windows 10 after I dug up the drivers on the web.

Can't you buy an USB extension cable and be done with it?

Im conflicted with this. I use a Ubikey for work purposes and that thing has been bulletproof.

Does anyone have experience with this one specifically? I'm interested, but hesitant to try because if there is a malfunction I definitely don't want to be locked out of my machine with zero support…

Beware! The bezel on these devices isn't well designed and can pop off rendering device useless. See comments section on AMZ for good description of this design weakness:-(

For Windows, go to the fingerprint reader's properties in device manager and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" under the Power Management tab. After changing that setting it works every time. I've had the older version of this for years and it works good.
