I used to design storage devices. In typical home or small business NAS, SSD will not improve speed or reliability. Please buy HDD to get more capacity for less $. Peace

1. NAS speed are often limited by NAS CPU/RAM or Ethernet/WiFi network - unless you buy expensive high-end NAS and 10Gbps Ethernet to support SSD.

2. Storage speed is in Bytes. Network speed is in bits. Computer class said 1 Byte = 8 bits. The real world adds 25% for frame and ECC, so 1 Byte = 10 bits.

3. See the warranty for how long a storage device may last. Please replace it earlier if you care about your data, so you won't pay $1000+ for data recovery service later.

4. WD Red HDD has 3 years warranty. WD Gold HDD has 5 years warranty. If NAS enables auto unload or standby, HDD can last even longer, but the first file access after idle will be delayed.

5. WD Blue SSD upgraded warranty from 3 to 5 years, but I will replace it in 2-3 years. When HDD fails, most data are often recoverable. When SSD fails, all data are usually unrecoverable.
This is Sandisk 3D TLC with DRAM. Good and reliable.

I may be mistaken but I dont think blue drives support hardware bitlocker the MX500 does. When top of the line Sata SSDs are discussed and compared the MX500 is always included. It may not come out on top compared to samsung but its always close. I never remember seeing the WD Blues Discussed. Blue has always been WD's lower end stuff not lowest end but lower end.

Trying to replace 2 4tb mechanical drives on my NAS.

Will these be better than WD red Nas drives?
Previous 2 (WD red) failed in about 4 years.

I have bought 4 WD blue SSDs in the last few years. However, it seems they changed DRAM capacity recently but didn't clearly disclose the changed capacity.

Reviews indicate that dram is only present in the 256GB and 512GB sizes.

I can't tell for sure but the endurance is either 600 or 800 TBW. That's about half what the mx500 offers for $10 more when on sale.

The MX500 has dram though only like a quarter of what's expected at its size. Apparently only the 4tb is underprovisioned in that regard.

westerndigital.com has ~10% cash back with capital one. The exact percentage updates frequently. I got 12% on my recent purchase.

That's amazing! If you have that card linked with PayPal and check out with PayPal, they offer 12% back in points. If CapitalOne participates, you will receive 12% and 10% back as PayPal encourages "double-dipping".

I originally purchased the MX500 (have not opened it yet), but am thinking about sending it back and grabbing this. Still trying to decide…testing seems to indicate they have almost identical performance. On paper, the Crucial is $10 more, but after cash back from PP and my card (not CapitalOne), the difference is about $30 assuming the 5% rewards I earned on the Crucial.

Thank you for this thoughtful response.

Is NVME reliability better? Aka if I want to store family photos on a single drive at my parents whose which works as an offsite backup and the reliability is the most important factor. Which drive should I get?
