A word of caution for those looking to buy the My Cloud Mirror. Understand what you are buying and the limitations it will have. The My Cloud Mirror (non Gen 2) is End of Service/End of Support and will stuck on OS3 (v2.x) firmware which is no longer receiving updates.
You guys need to know about something called bit rot. Essentially, the physical drive media decays and the sequence of 1s and 0s start to errode and cause corruption. Everything you store / love will eventually become corrupt and you won't even know until you happen to try to access it later.
I wasn't able to confirm if this device uses / supports XFS. If not, a device like this will NOT protect your data from bit rot even if using raid. Raid is NOT the right tool for long term STORAGE!
Let me bottom line it for you. I've lost many family members and the closest thing I have of these loved ones are these photos and videos. It's all I have left. Raid has its place, but only short term storage.
If you want long term storage, you should suck it up and buy apple / Google / Amazon storage. For one monthly payment, your protecting yourself from fires/floods/acts of god/theft/ransomeware, etc. This stuff happens!!
In that fee, you're paying them to make sure bit rot doesn't eat your data, they are replacing drives that fail and have security engineers 24 x 7 making sure you have the latest patches and security updates. They are updating the Android / iPhone apps to always work with all future updated phones and versions. You have support if you have issues. You're also paying somone to protect the servers.
Lastly, exposing anything to the internet is dangerous but if want to share the files, you need to. If you want to backup from anywhere you need to.
Your monthly fee also pays security people to make sure this is secure as well. They are experts. How fast does WD release updates? For how long? You get more and more storage for the same price over time and that's an investment as well.
This stuff is too valuable! This stuff is a battle of attrition and how long are you going to keep up with it before human nature costs you something you can't ever fix or get back?
I never understood the value and yes, there are devices like syncology, which are amazing, and support xfs to protect from bit rot, but won't protect you from human nature.
Your family will Thank you.

As a reference, I bought a refurb 4tb (2x2tb) for $130 back in 2018 direct from WD. Still going strong, but surprised the prices haven't dropped more.
I guess NAS does not depreciate much compared to other tech products.

Just reading up on this. Am I correct that if you purchase the 4TB and have it set for Mirror Mode then your capacity is 2TB?
That's correct. Mirror Mode essentially is Raid 1, which means 2 drives mirror each other for redundency so that one drive's failure would not cause data loss.

I don't recall but I had an older version of 4TB foe which they discounted NAS and other support due to the fact that they can't upgrade their os to latest security patches and thus it became and offline non NAS external storage hard drives only.
Also, not sure if they have had any improvements on their app as that was crappy and had connection issues accessing the drive over the wifi

There's the 3-2-1 storage technique. You have 3 copies, two locally on different drives and then cloud. You back up in cloud only for cold storage/emergency retrieval only which is much cheaper. Setup VPN to access network remotely.
