WD My Cloud Mirror (Certified Refurbished): 8TB $200, 4TB Expired

Just reading up on this. Am I correct that if you purchase the 4TB and have it set for Mirror Mode then your capacity is 2TB?

As a reference, I bought a refurb 4tb (2x2tb) for $130 back in 2018 direct from WD. Still going strong, but surprised the prices haven't dropped more.

You guys need to know about something called bit rot. Essentially, the physical drive media decays and the sequence of 1s and 0s start to errode and cause corruption. Everything you store / love will eventually become corrupt and you won't even know until you happen to try to access it later.

I wasn't able to confirm if this device uses / supports XFS. If not, a device like this will NOT protect your data from bit rot even if using raid. Raid is NOT the right tool for long term STORAGE!

Let me bottom line it for you. I've lost many family members and the closest thing I have of these loved ones are these photos and videos. It's all I have left. Raid has its place, but only short term storage.

If you want long term storage, you should suck it up and buy apple / Google / Amazon storage. For one monthly payment, your protecting yourself from fires/floods/acts of god/theft/ransomeware, etc.This stuff happens!!

In that fee, you're paying them to make sure bit rot doesn't eat your data, they are replacing drives that fail and have security engineers 24 x 7 making sure you have the latest patches and security updates. They are updating the Android / iPhone apps to always work with all future updated phones and versions. You have support if you have issues. You're also paying somone to protect the servers.

Lastly, exposing anything to the internet is dangerous but if want to share the files, you need to. If you want to backup from anywhere you need to.

Your monthly fee also pays security people to make sure this is secure as well. They are experts. How fast does WD release updates? For how long? You get more and more storage for the same price over time and that's an investment as well.

This stuff is too valuable! This stuff is a battle of attrition and how long are you going to keep up with it before human nature costs you something you can't ever fix or get back?
