I'd caution anyone looking to root their device that when you see a phone called 'unlocked' it frequently is referring to 'SIM unlocked' rather than 'bootloader unlockable' -- I cannot stress enough that these are *drastically* different things. It is the latter (bootloader unlockable) which allows for rooting to be achieved. The former (SIM unlocked) just allows you to use whichever carrier you choose right out of the gates without any hassle.

Notably, not nearly as many people root anymore, and the ability to unlock the bootloader is not something that matters if you're not planning to root.
To preface, I traded in my Pixel 5 or a Pixel 7 Pro a little before Christmas. I haven't experienced the camera glass shattering, but I've read a lot about it. It has nothing to do with how the user handles the device. It's a design flaw related to the difference in thermal expansion between the metal camera bar and the camera glass. It only affects people who have used their phones for extended periods of time in extreme cold weather.

Google at first gave users push back when trying to get warranty repair or replacement, but has now recognized that it is not the user's fault and is quick to rectify the issue.
Not trying to be rude, but someone would have to go through literally the exact same process you would to obtain that information, so why not just go check the value yourself on best buy website?

Can we buy this phone with Google Fi activation, and then cancel Fi a day or so later? The terms of the whole "activate today" thing are hazy, especially since this is an unlocked phone!

Are these basically the same deal?

Edit: Edit: Nvm... this one is for the Pixel 7 Pro, and that one's for the regular Pixel 7.

Ok...roast me all you want for asking, but anyone know if this can be purchased for activation on an existing Verizon line without any trade in requirements?

Adding to the list of questions, is the version sold through Best Buy the one that allows for the bootloader to be unlocked (for rooting purposes) or is that variety only available through Google directly? I know that most versions sold through the carriers have permanently locked bootloaders.

Good question! This is the type of hidden gotcha I worry about.

Just pick the unlocked version. You can still activate it with any of the carriers and get the $599 deal

That is a good question among a family of questions which basically should distill to what exact phone MODEL is being sold here, since not all MODELS may be identical.

When I was over at the google store site they somewhere had a set of choices for which carrier you wanted to buy for e.g. a pixel 6a and then some other page had tech specs on the various model numbers which were actually different according to the carrier selected e.g. verizon, google fi, etc.

And looking at the tech specs one could see there were actually some hardware / firmware level differences e.g. the verizon usa oriented model supported some couple of uwb 5g bands and a couple other differences than the model then sell you if you pick "google fi" as a carriet or some such other option in the us.

I have no idea if that's the same on the p7 but I suppose it could be.

And those are all for "unlocked" phones (p6a in my example) so in theory yeah you COULD use the various models with various carriers if the carriers let you but there may be some defaults / branding / firmware / hw support configurations that could "always" be different depending on which actual model configuration phone you initially buy.

And then of course for locking and SIM derived configurations for handsets in general and installed carrier apps carriers further "customize" / break people's phones and make them not really the same even though they may eventually be unlocked and somewhat usable on other carriers some differences might be unavoidable to change after purchase. Also same sort of thing buying a model for some region like UK you may get different stuff than the US model and never can quite have the same functionality even if you put the US SIM in there and go to the US.
