If you don't believe me… and yours is a year old or more, go ahead and wash it. Then place the lid in a light colored bowl or pot and pour steaming hot water in to cover it. Let it soak overnight. The next morning, give it a stir in the bowl and notice what floats out.
(I was using mine for coffee with cream and sugar. It's possible that if you only use yours for water or black coffee you might be fine.)
