Waiting for the AM5 version should be out in a month or less, and then these will all fall in price anyways
Amazon is price-matching it.
But then you'd have to also purchase a new motherboard and DDR5 RAM.

If you're building a new PC then AM5 3D is the way to go. If you're on AM4 currently then this is the best CPU to get for gaming and this won't change since no new AM4 chips will be made.

There's a section at the end where it shows the gains from the 5800 vs the x3d. Basically, you'd need to have a monitor capable of more than 120 Hz and play your games in low enough settings that you can reach over 120 frames for it to matter.

That's true in many esp. older games where frame rates were already crazy high with anything... but a few of the games he tested fps even with the X3D didn't have framerates >120.

Cities for example was almost 20% faster with the X3D vs the X at all resolutions from 1080p to 4k...gains in MS Flight Simulator were also around 20% at both 1080p and 1440p (but tiny at 4k as GPU bound only at that resolution).

More relevant is he tested with a 3090ti, so a lot more games would be GPU bound at 4k there versus if you were going with a 4090 today.

When I was only running a 3090 I stuck with my 3600x (which I originally built when I was running a 1080ti) because of exactly what you describe-- games were almost universally GPU bound at 4k where I was playing so upgrading the CPU would not help.

That's no longer true with the 4090, and so I upgraded to a 5800X3D and saw significant gains from it in 4k

See again my earlier link with 4090 testing... for example Borderlands 3 with a 5800X was 90.2 fps, and with a 5800X3D was 125.6. The X3D can max a 120 display, the non-vcache one is 25% off of that... Elden Ring and Age of Empires IV neither CPU hits 120 fps, but the X3D is about 10% faster....Far Cry 6 the 5800X again does not quite get to 120 fps...but the X3D does at about 10% faster.... (and obviously the jump from my 3600X was even bigger in such examples)

THAT said....I don't do significant productivity workload stuff on this system- if I did that might change the math (possibly by a lot depending on how much of it and what type)

I have a Ryzen7 2700 with an RX 570 GPU. It sounds, from comments, that this should be the CPU to aim for for general game longevity. What GPU should I be looking for to keep in the same AM4 performance with ASrock B450M pro4?

For gaming it'd definitely be a significant upgrade.

https://www.techpowerup.com/revie...3d/22.html

Even at 4k it's like a 20% jump in gaming 3900x to 5800X3D- at 1440 even bigger jump.

THAT said- you're going from a 12 core part to an 8 core part- so for productivity it's gonna depend how heavily it can use those extra cores.... some examples of when you may or may not get better results with one vs the other-

For AI specifically:

5800X3d beats the 3900X pretty strongly.

But in say blender or in cinebench multi rendering- not so much (beats in single rendering though)

It would be a no-brainer for me if I could get it for $250.
