IMO the introduction and evolution of outdoor Bluetooth speakers has really taken a chunk of sales from these wired outdoor speakers especially the battery powered Bluetooth speakers. I have hardwired backyard speakers and powered by indoor older Yamaha receiver with separate Bluetooth receiver hooked into it. Sounds awesome but I also have a monster tailgate battery powered speaker that it seems gets more and more usage in my back yard activities. I can just wheel it outside turn it on and instant music! My wired outdoor speakers stopped working on one channel and I am in the process of finding where the short circuit is but at this point am debating whether to spend even more time fixing the issue or just let it be and use my powered outdoor Bluetooth tailgating speaker all the time now.
I always prefer to have multiple outdoor speakers compared to one large speaker. It's a lot more hassle to install and not every setup can justify it, but it does allow you to have conversations near and far away from the speakers as the sound is better distributed with many small speakers. It's a luxury, you're going to pay for it in speaker count, installation, and wiring. Everyone has to evaluate their situation.
I've also got the AW650's. Paired with a solid stereo amp playing HD/Hi Res songs through wifi definitely gives much greater detail. I've got some really good bluetooth speakers that admittedly sound good, but there's still no comparison really. Plus you can place your wired setup correctly for good imaging, kick back in your favorite chair and bathe in beautiful stereo.. I have them setup in our courtyard and It's bliss. I love when I go out there it's already set up and ready to go Smilie. Bluetooth speakers are great for the beach, and even the back yard in a pinch. My favorite is the Aiwa Exos 9.

What's so special about these as opposed to something like the Yamaha that was $100 last week

I've a pair of the 650's and they sound great. They look identical with same mounting, hook ups, and quick release end screw tabs…

You definitely have more options available with hard wired speakers. I have a cd player hooked to my indoor receiver also and a outside speaker volume control (not needed for Bluetooth streaming) As far as sound wise no one ever can really agree what quality of sound is okay for them as it too personal. We all know junk sounding speakers when we hear them but how much money and how much install time are we willing to pay for acceptable sound? I remember having the advent wireless outdoor speakers 30 years ago. The sound was decent but was transmitted through 900MHz and some days they worked great and other days would keep dropping out!..lol They we're a nightmare. I suppose in summary I will say I am very impressed with the battery powered Bluetooth speakers and the clear sound that many of them are able to reproduce. They have come a LONG way for us older stereo guys that lived through a lot of the junk that was offered through the years. People today want plug and play and I have actually myself got caught up a lot of tech to make easier. I have a very nice Klipsch indoor blue tooth speaker I listen to more often than I do my Harmon Kardon component stereo nowadays. I flip the "on switch" on the Klipsch speaker stream my playlists and get nice sounding music with very little effort.

I agree with you. The hassle of having to wire, connect to a receiver, then possibly another source is a headache. The flexibility of Bluetooth speakers is best. I use Soundcore and they are amazing. You can pair them together for that surround effect

Perhaps the next phase of outdoor speakers will be a subwoofer that pairs with the wireless speakers? OSD has a Bluetooth outdoor subwoofer but you have to use it with wiring for your main outdoor speakers so it's Bluetooth but not wireless…yet.

These are also a good option if you want to add some Atmos top speakers to your home theater but can't do in-ceiling speakers. I just added four AW-650's that were on sale for $259/pair and they work great.
