It was a lot of fun playing this on the Quest 2 wirelessly. One of the best VR games out there.
Yeah, so dead. 3D TV was a fad that lasted maybe 3-4 years before going (mostly) defunct. VR has been constantly growing and going on 10 years with tech that keeps getting better. gtfo.
This is one of the best games ever made. It's on my short list of greatest "entertainment" products of all-time. An absolutely fantastic game.

I haven't done anything other than just test out desktop mode with AirLink. How's the latency? Was planning on jumping back into Arizona Sunshine with my friend (haven't played since 2018, when I had Rift).

If latency isn't too bad, I think I might pick up Alyx. Heard too many good things about it.
Adding my $.02. I play this and other games via air link and it's basically indistinguishable from my old Rift setup (that is directly connected), but some people have had problems with performance. Air Link has a troubleshooter that tells you the recommended setup and whether yours meets it. 5Ghz AC or AX wifi, 80MHZ (3 channel) bandwidth, and low latency from the wifi to the host computer are recommended. I use a Unify AP and I had to increase the channel width to meet the recommendations. Computer has a GTX 1080 and an i7 9700K, connected via ethernet.

I bought the game but not the hardware
Then Facebook - erm - Meta raised price of Quest
For price of Quest 2 I could get a 6700xt
After Alyx I dont see anything else interesting
Games have gone south - lots of fruity colorful bling games like on android.
Elden Ring looked interesting until I saw combat (looked like the hokey Batman key mashing Batman games)
Guess I'll wait until Alyx 2.0 to get the rig
Resident Evil 4 VR. No Man's Sky (via air link). The Last Clockwinder. Plenty of fun things to play especially when you include the desktop stuff via air link.

Any recommendations for a cheap VR headset that will work for this?
Buy a used Oculus Rift for $100. Make sure it has both controllers and at least 2 towers. Spend a few bucks to get a replacement liner pad.

Never understood why a hugely anticipated franchise drops a new game after several decades only to lock it behind a niche piece of hardware and a pc environment lmao. Whatever. I'm glad yall with vr get to enjoy this but I have absolutely zero interest in that.
Valve doesn't make many games anymore in general. When Half Life came out it was quite innovative and had a big effect on the fps genre so maybe they wanted to do that again, doing something innovative with it, but through VR.

Is it helpful to have played the previous Half Life games? I see they are on sale as well.

What do you need to play on the Quest 2?
Quest 2 headset
Half Life Alyx VR on Steam
Steam VR on PC (Free)
Oculus Desktop App on PC (Free)
5Ghz Wi-Fi or a long enough USB Cable to connect to PC via Quest Link.

Depends on your router and distance from it. You need to be in the same room and connected at 5ghz. The pc needs to be connected via ethernet. Personally I played HLA using Virtual Desktop before airlink was a thing a few years ago and it worked very well.
I bought a $90 w6 gaming router to run wireless but found my comcast modem does the job just fine and I'm in the basement. The router will go in the garage where I'll have a lot more room to move. You might hold off on the router purchase until you see how it fairs. The quest 2 is also a computer in its own right and there's enough titles that run on the headset alone to keep you going until a router is delivered.
