It was a lot of fun playing this on the Quest 2 wirelessly. One of the best VR games out there.
Yeah, so dead. 3D TV was a fad that lasted maybe 3-4 years before going (mostly) defunct. VR has been constantly growing and going on 10 years with tech that keeps getting better. gtfo.
This is one of the best games ever made. It's on my short list of greatest "entertainment" products of all-time. An absolutely fantastic game.

I bought the game but not the hardware
Then Facebook - erm - Meta raised price of Quest
For price of Quest 2 I could get a 6700xt
After Alyx I dont see anything else interesting
Games have gone south - lots of fruity colorful bling games like on android.
Elden Ring looked interesting until I saw combat (looked like the hokey Batman key mashing Batman games)
Guess I'll wait until Alyx 2.0 to get the rig
Resident Evil 4 VR. No Man's Sky (via air link). The Last Clockwinder. Plenty of fun things to play especially when you include the desktop stuff via air link.

Any recommendations for a cheap VR headset that will work for this?
Buy a used Oculus Rift for $100. Make sure it has both controllers and at least 2 towers. Spend a few bucks to get a replacement liner pad.

Never understood why a hugely anticipated franchise drops a new game after several decades only to lock it behind a niche piece of hardware and a pc environment lmao. Whatever. I'm glad yall with vr get to enjoy this but I have absolutely zero interest in that.
Valve doesn't make many games anymore in general. When Half Life came out it was quite innovative and had a big effect on the fps genre so maybe they wanted to do that again, doing something innovative with it, but through VR.

Is it helpful to have played the previous Half Life games? I see they are on sale as well.

Depends on your router and distance from it. You need to be in the same room and connected at 5ghz. The pc needs to be connected via ethernet. Personally I played HLA using Virtual Desktop before airlink was a thing a few years ago and it worked very well.
I bought a $90 w6 gaming router to run wireless but found my comcast modem does the job just fine and I'm in the basement. The router will go in the garage where I'll have a lot more room to move. You might hold off on the router purchase until you see how it fairs. The quest 2 is also a computer in its own right and there's enough titles that run on the headset alone to keep you going until a router is delivered.

Don't give up too easily, you kinda have to train yourself to get used to it. My first day with my headset I was playing with it fine for awhile. Mostly stand in place games, I finally did a roller coaster game and immediately got nauseous and had one of the worst headaches afterwards that lasted about 24 hours. I did some research and learned to just slowly work your way into it. After playing for awhile I'm much better now, i can even do the roller coaster no problem.
My experience is that if you have continuous movement on you need to be seated or you will get nauseous and / or lose balance. If you have the game set to teleport standing is fine.

... because once you play it in VR, you realize there's really no other way you'd want to play the game. It's one of the greatest games of all time, and one of the most immersive pieces of media I've ever seen. It really is that good.
No lie it's shockingly good. I hope VR holds on long enough to get a headset with better resolution and field of view at a $400 - $500 price point but for now there's plenty of content and it's just such a cool piece of tech, limitations and all.

Pros - It's ass kickingly immersive. It will change your understanding of gaming and to some degree content consumption in general. It's very smart about your safety considering it's a blackout blindfold. Does not conflict with Nvidia in home streaming so you can remote play your regular games too.

Cons - Limited FOV, Limited Battery, Must be worn exactly correct to be in focus, You can't drink beer with the headset on, Movement in game is always a compromise. Can be finicky to set up. Did I mention the Pros?

One of the best games ever. Would not hesitate even at full price. Mod community also makes it pretty re-playable too.

I haven't played this one but HL1 and especially 2 are absolutely classic experiences. The first one has a raytracing mod out now.

You might as well get them. There's a free vrmod for half-life 2 if you own it and it's still amazing after beating half-life alyx

It's already there. I recently bought Meta Quest 2. What an amazing device and experience. I generally get motion sickness but with Quest 2 I never felt the motion sickness. Games like table tennis, golf, saints and sinners are phenomenal and very realistic. Games like supernatural are true gym exercise experience at home. I use supernatural every day for 15 to 30 mins to burn calories.
The Quest 2 experience is actually pretty bad compared to more comfortable headsets with better clarity, better comfort, and higher resolution. Even the visual experience in an HP G2 is far beyond what the quest can offer and its actually comfortable to wear.

I've had people try the quest and hate wearing it and be turned off by the horrible clarity, and then they've tried some of my other headsets and their opinion of VR changed.

The next generation of headsets may be when we finally hit the perfect balance of clarity, resolution, FoV, and comfort.

This!

As a HL fan its being my favorite game of all times. I was butt hurt when they released Alyx on VR only. Fortunately my kids left their VR set when they moved out. I decided to give it a go. It's just amazing! I did get motion sickness for the first time from a VR game.

Do you need a strong GPU on the PC as well? Or does the Quest 2 handle the processing?
