The OP's point is, Amazon is known to be sloppy when it comes to such things.
If you're buying something for security purposes, do you want to save $20-$50, or do you want to be safe?
The smarter money is on the latter.

I recently changed jobs and purchased a new dedicated laptop for the job - which, surprisingly, didn't have a fingerprint reader. I'm also now running my Thinkpad X1 with the lid closed, which prevents me from using its built in reader.
I picked up 2 of these and it makes logging back in super fast and convenient - just like using the built in reader on my Thinkpad.
Definitely recommend.

I'm using 2 factor authentications for them right now via the Google Authenticator App on my phone which is somewhat cumbersome and slow to use. Hopefully I can use the fingerprint reader to speed things up a bit and make logging in more convenient.
It's always nerve racking finding a Buy it Now deal on EBay and having to log into PayPal for payment via 2 Factor Authentication and wasting precious seconds that can cost me the bargain giving some other cheap basterd a chance to purchase
That way I can quickly scan my fingerprint without taking any additional space on my desk. Just hope that I don't run into any funky incompatibility issues not connecting the fingerprint reader directly to an USB port on my PC...
This used to be a huge problem as it was random.chance you actually got an Amazon sourced item Vs mixing in counterfeits. In this case a.comprised device could result in your data being stolen
