Yes. Regular alkaline batteries are 1.5v. So 6 of them means 9v. Regular rechargeable batteries are 1.3v at full charge. It doesn't make much difference if you you are using 2 (3v VS 2.6v). But it is significant between 9v and 7.8v(or less). Well designed circuit could handle this diff but cheap ones doesn't usually cut it.

I bought 4 R/C cars at Best Buy over 15 yrs for $5 ea on clearance. They are the ones that can use 4 aa or the rechargeable 6v battery. Using those 6v ones those cars go pretty fast, and on tile or similar slick floor, they can do drifting, and all kinds of tricks. They still work, and the grandkids used to play with them quite a bit. The cars have been through many bumps and scrapes and just keep going. Any R/C cars I have bought since don't seem to last very long. They certainly don't make like they used to.
