tried to create an account - tells me userid already exists but won't let me edit my email which I can only guess is what they mean by user ID

This. I used CashApp Taxes, and ended up having to do the entire thing over in FTUSA due to missing options on a form they listed as supported. Only use Cash App if you have straightforward tax returns.
Easy as pie
Yup, FreeTaxUSA actually allows you to do your taxes core free if they're simple. Turbo tax is a terribly overpriced product. Had all my younger family switch since their taxes are super simple. They have a job, a W2, that's it. Free.
