They tend to start to have a funky odor after a while and when run if not cleaned will spread that funk around a bit as it vacuums.
The hose that wraps around the unit tends to wear out over time. My last one tore and lost suction. I was able to limp it along for the better part of a year wrapping the hose with some silicone tape.
Otherwise they are very handy, also the hose on my first tore within 2 years. I had a squaretrade warranty and they ponied up for the cost of a replacement. May be worth purchasing an inexepensive extended warranty.
