Not directing this at you by any means since I don't know you and your situation, but I see so many people who would spend $500, $1000 or more on a latest phone despite having a perfectly working one, but wouldn't spend $300-400 on something like this that lasts a lifetime or a set of good knives for $500 that will last almost as long to make cooking so much more pleasurable. I was guilty of this myself! I think it's misplaced perception of what's something is really worth vs what you can or have to spend traditionally. I really loved that I got past this mentality.

I considered this but almost every review seems to agree that the shape is not great. It gives you much less flat cooking or browning space. I ended up pulling the trigger on the $260 Staub 9qt from yesterday instead.

Unless you are cooking the same stuff all the time, that's not how it works. I think most people cook (really cook) less than 3 times a week, and different things using different pans etc each time. There's plenty of quality cookware out there at varying prices.

It REALLY depends on what you are cooking in it & how you use it, it's a Chevy vs Ford thing, different folks have different use cases and thus preferences.

Good luck with that 9 qt, that is a VERY BIG Dutch Oven! Great price though, no question.

All I have now is the 8 quart that came in my Calphalon nonstick set, and I always find myself just about overflowing it, so I am very excited for the nine quart! Will have to hit arms at the gym more often though. Don't wanna drop all my precious stew!

Consider the 6-3/4 qt Low wide round instead. 30 cm lid. More bottom real estate for browning large batches of chicken without crowding. Low 4" perfect as a roaster and better for table service and entertaining. It's on sale at W-Sonoma, see the SD deal. This one is just a big soup pot.

I cook for a family of four 4-5 times a week. Each time I use 3-4 different pots, sometimes 2 of the same size, but typically all different sizes for 1 meal. I may not be typical, but I cannot imagine typical people cook 1 dish using 1 pot a meal. Not only that, a pot of any size can be used to cook hundreds of different dishes. This particular size is definitely on the lesser used end, but I can see plenty of use for it. A Le Creuset set that works for 90% of what you typical need costs less than a high end smart phone and lasts a lifetime. People can afford it more than they perceive, they just choose not to.

Same thing with All Clad pans… you'll never burn food again once you ditch the cheap aluminum crap

LOL is anyone paying $462 for a ceramic bowl? For that price you could buy an actual oven.
Really depends on how often you cook. If most of your home cooking involves TV dinner, boxed meals, and instant ramen, this is a waste of money. But a great chef can still cook great food with basic tools. Great tools only make life easier for chefs.

Quality Wise: Based on reputation, if you take care of it, this will last generations. A good dutch oven will let you braise, bake, fry, pan sear, etc...

Personally, I'll have to see if this would be a good wedding gift...

It's not that I don't think this is a nice pan that will last a long time, it's that $300 is just too much. The Le Creuset brand is legendary and that's absolutely reflected in their prices. I have a similar Tramontina pan that I've had for years of light usage now, even heating no chipping etc, cost like sixty bucks.

All I'm saying is I know this pan is nice, but I don't think it's worth 500 or even 300 when viewed purely as functionality.
