Since it's Fiji, not likely. National carriers love to deliver you via their home country (it makes logistical sense and many allow extended layovers to visit).
There's also a school of thought that being able to stop, stretch, use a real bathroom, and eat real food is preferable to going the whole way nonstop. I can totally see that.
Nice bonus to not have to go to Auckland like most flights. That's WAY up north, while Wellington is more central (southern tip of the North Island). NZ isn't as small as most people think.
Edit: Hard to find details, but at least one site noted that Fiji allows up to a 2-day extended stopover on their flights. That's huge (if true), 2 countries for the price of one…
