MADE IN CHINA now - No, thank you. I would rather buy Taiwanese, Korean, Japanese or from any NATO Countries.
I had a similar knife as my first knife as a kid. It's a slip joint and the detent is all that holds the blade open or closed, no lock, but that's not really as hazardous as many make it out to be. Scouts and outdoors folks young and hold have been using similar knives for generations. Just teach your kid no stabbing with the knife. And being made of 7Cr17 is a decent steel for this kind of budget folder, similar to 440A, it will be easy to sharpen and should have decent wear and corrosion resistance, with decent toughness.

As a Scout who used similar knives for a generation, my fingernails hate slipjoints. But I agree that I always knew what was holding the knife open, and what I needed to not do to avoid it slamming shut, and it was never a problem at all.

That said, I've generally been picking up <3" lockbacks and Moras on sale for this generation. These weren't half bad:

Had to learn this the hard way when I was small. Grabbed the knife without looking and tried to stab a piece of wood only for it to close on my hand instead of going through the wood. Cut all the way to the bone and had to be rushed to the emergency room. Still have the scar even though it's been a lifetime. Ah good ol times.

I am a fan of Buck knives, but I'm not sure if this particular one is substantially different from the Schrade. But I can agree to disagree - it's only $3 - and let's be honest, it was only a $4 sale in the first place.

It shows normal price is $9.42 so it's only .58 discount. Whoa! Hold back the sale hunters!
