Most USB-C hubs don't allow for that, restricting: ability to repair, length options, male end angle options, etc. (edit: Extension cables can cause performance issues with charge or data rates, and generally are pretty poorly made unless you pay a premium)
The hub feels like it's made of very cheap plastic compared to other Anker options of a similar price, but it works well.
I don't imagine the shell will cause any issues, just odd that this is so pricey compared to their aluminum options. I'm assuming it has to do with the detachable cable.
I've been using using it for my car audio setup to connect to it my DAC/DSP and play hi-resolution audio while charging my phone.

I personally use this one, which is lighter than the baseus, has 2.5gb Ethernet, 10gb USB ports, and is still cheaper than this Anker. It supports 4k120, but has only one HDMI port:

I am looking for a dock and want to hide it under my desk (by my kvm) so this is appealing but don't want to give priority to a removable cable when an extension would work just as well.

Extension cables are often poorly constructed (unless you pay) and can hinder charge and data rates.
If you want to completely avoid reliability, compatibility, and performance issues, this is the way to go.
With this, you can simply buy a nice, guaranteed to function at advertised rates USB-C cable and be good to go. Though you might be able to research an extension that fits your needs with another hub; I doubt you'll find a deal this good.

I don't have a 4K monitor (yet). Very happy with my "Dell S2721DGF 27" 1440p 165hz". Need to get another, my second monitor is an "ASUS VP249QGR 23.8" 144Hz" that I got in May 2020 during the monitor shortage lol.
This will go nicely with my desktop PC that I currently have a Aukey one from a couple years ago that is not very good.
Had to go dig up the order for that Aukey I have.
AUKEY CBC78
Got it for $37 in 2021.
Not a fan.
