I could list a bunch of technical reasons, but I'll just say the most basic reason to get one...
...you can make the SSID the same as your home router and when you connect to a new internet source all your devices will auto connect as if they were home. This is tied with the fact if you are in a hotel that only allows X amount of devices to connect to your room WiFi, you won't need to worry. The router acts as a single device no matter how many devices are connected to it.
If you travel - get this or one similar in function.

Either into a guest wired/wireless network, or on your hotspot; it can be one of the best (practical) security/privacy measures as it runs OpenWrt, can serve as a VPN client, etc etc.

- connect to a hotel WiFi network and rebroadcast your own SSID using the hotel WiFi as the WAN
- connect via USB to an iPhone or Android phone and act as a more powerful mobile hotspot
- act as a normal wireless router or AP if your destination has wired network ports
- do one or more of the above as a multi-WAN setup and either load balance or fail over.
We love traveling with these because you don't have to teach your phone about a flaky captive portal that always brings up a login page. Also sometimes hotels put their WiFi APs in their hallways and the WiFi is weak in the room, so we set this thing up near the entrance.

edit: read the user manual: (under CPU Average load - you can adjust the fan settings for temp threshold)

We've got four kids, and we're usually got about eight connected devices with us when we go on vacations or their sporting events. When we get wherever we're going (VRBO, hotel, sports competition, or whatever), we just need to connect the travel router to the destination's internet, rather than needing to connect all devices individually.
These travel routers are powered by USB, so you can run then from a wall plug, car USB port, or battery pack. My 10,000 AH batter pack runs this router for more than an entire day.
The external antennas really help with the receiving and broadcasting strength. We were recently at a swim meet, and my iPad couldn't connect to the host's weak WiFi signal. So, I connected this router from the same spot and then was able to get my iPad online with really solid speeds.
Final thing I'll add is that you can add a VPN. We like to watch the international broadcasts for swimming meets. So, we put our VPN profile in the router (took about five minutes with the manufacturer's clear instructions) and then can connect to Australian or UK feeds without needing to install any VPN software on whichever device we're using to watch.
The model in this deal is more expensive because of some features like faster WiFi, USB3 (instead of USB2), TF card support, etc.
Here is a table that details the specs of each model. https://www.gl-inet.com/products/compare/
To be clear, you don't need one of these routers in order to do that. But it makes things easier because all of your devices will automatically be protected just by connecting to this router.
If you don't have anything to host your VPN on, they sell a device for $70 here that can do it:
