I have an ALR screen and 50% shade blinds, not blackout blinds. Using a light meter app with my blinds closed at the brightest time of day I measure around 20 FC. This is a well lit room, but not super bright. I just watched the new Flash movie in this room at this light level. The scene where super girl is outside for the first time looks awesome. The dark scenes inside the bat cave the blacks look grey and you won't be able to see some of the shadow detail.
After dark with lights out everything looks great. Sports are good to watch any time of day. This is the same price as their bulb protectors, so the laser is hands down better and a no brainer if that's what you are considering. If you want to pay $3K for the 5050UB then that's going to obviously be better at twice the price.
The other thing to be aware of is that zoom is very limited on this projector and it has no shift, so you need to place it very precisely.
I'd say, if you are in the market for a living room projector and you can place this one where it needs to be, at this price it's a very good option. If you are dropping tons of money in a dedicated home theater room then maybe probably should spend 5K and get the new Epson laser or even more $$ and get a jvc
This projector has 1 year warranty and 5 year on laser. If you buy this using a credit card like chase sapphire preferred then you get additional warranty for 1 more year.
Don't buy from anywhere other than Amazon else you have to pay return shipping.
A bit of background: I have a dedicated large home theater and have been an avid projector owner for about 25 years. I used to actually sell and service CRT projectors for home theaters and have been chasing the CRT black levels ever since. I bought this projector a month ago to finally make the jump to a 4k laser. I have been holding off till we got fiber to the house and now that I do, I can take advantage of the 4k on my 120" screen.
The first few days of using it I was honestly regretting my purchase. I kept tweaking and chasing settings, and it kept changing to something that looked terribly blown out and artificial. But after about a week or two, I got the settings locked down by playing with the inputs as well as the projector settings. In my 100% light controlled setting, the projector was actually too bright! (feels weird even typing that) Turning the power level down to 50% helped but in the end I added a ND filter which got the black levels to the inky black that I have been looking for.
After 2 weeks of watching I have been struggling to find any defects to no avail: The super fast rate makes for smooth video, the black levels with the ND is almost perfect, colors are spot on, skin tones are realistic but the colors are still vivid and pop, it's near dead silent (High altitude mode is very noisy), uses very little power and I don't have a bulb to worry about.. Now that I have it set, I couldn't be happier with it.
If you need the smart features and/or optical adjustments then the UHZ50 is the better choice. If you don't need those bells and whistles then this thing is hard to beat, but expect to spend some quality time getting it adjusted.
