I'll say right now I have no intent to buy these, but what can these do vs other hifi systems/receivers with similar hookups?
Great question. They all play music, stream, etc. The sound quality you get from devices like these is fantastic. The build quality is also impressive. Their streaming integrated does it all and is amazingly convenient. Add speakers and away you go. You can get similar quality with multiple devices, I suppose. Hifi rose does all of those things a bit better than many others. And it's just cool to look at too.

I did a similar thing. Got a 2010 Onkyo for $40 on OfferUp and a set of Onkyo 5.1 speakers for $35 on FB marketplace.
The only catch - the passive sun has only 2 speaker wires going in. The receiver has a Pre Out for active subs. Now need to figure if I need an amp for the sub. If so, another $12 on Temu! Lol.
Any thoughts on whether how I can plug in the passive sub with just speaker wire inputs to receiver?
Get a Wiim mini and plug it into whatever you already have via optical and you're all set.
You get Bluetooth and AirPlay receiver. If you are satisfied with it then you just saved yourself a ton of money. If you aren't, then you're only out $80 (when on sale) to $100 (regular price).
Also check out the Wiim Pro for $150. It has some additional features that you might like.
