Howard Forums has the most Tracfone experts, and they recommend taking screenshots of your balance regularly. I have not had any problems with my family's Tracfone lines, but unfortunately if you draw the short straw, Tracfone is not known for their great CSRs.
just know that TracFone routinely zeroes out your balance.
Since the plan came with the phone, you will have a very hard time getting your plan back. They always want to see when you last BOUGHT the plan.
Tracfone nuked one of my lines doing a transfer. Subsequent calls resulted in another line getting wiped out - probably 7 calls in all with a wide range of awful behavior by the CSRs. I filed an informal complaint with the fcc with screenshots of balance and time/date of each call + timeline of all the shenanigans. After a few weeks and a couple emails, a Tracfone rep that deals with fcc complaints calls and the problems are all fixed in about 10 minutes.

Why didn't they just fix it in the first place? You're correct they just don't care about fixing the problem once it falls outside whatever script they have. Any sort of common sense/logic falls on deaf ears. Their goal isn't to help you at this point, but make you give up through whatever means possible. The best recourse IS an informal FCC complaint which is very much free and was extremely effective for me.

Tracfone CSR is so horrible it should be criminal.

Is there a definitive answer on how long you can hold off from activating the phone and not lose the 1-year unlimited talk/text/24gb plan?

I keep hearing that you have to activate the phone within a year of purchase, but other ppl have stated they've activated their phones well AFTER a year and still had their year of service intact (albeit the 1200 talk/text/2gb plan)

What is the DEFINITIVE deadline to activate these phones and is it written anywhere on TracFone's site?

Pretty sure it will. All the min/txt/data carry over when you add additional service days. If you have lots of data you don't need, you can just add 30MB/90 days for $20.

I have a Tracfone that I keep in my car just for emergency purposes. It has ~ 20GB of data, but ~ 8 years of service days.

I'm not sure there is a DEFINITIVE deadline, especially for a plan like this. Most people aren't willing to take a chance at losing a 1-year plan. A lot of those phones activated after a year were cheap flip phones or low-end smart phones.

Even if there were a lot of data points, I still wouldn't trust Tracfone to continue their policy or to be consistent with applying whatever policy they do have. Everything to do with their customer service is a crapshoot.
