False.
224+ has Intel cpu and GPU.
Hardware transcoding works great on this box.

DS224+ is Intel, not AMD. Just stop posting.

So just to be clear, the DS224+ should work for remotely streaming Plex, right?

As others have pointed out, you can (and should) use "Direct Play" remotely.

Simply ensure your client devices are configured to use maximum/original quality for both audio and video.

You can also easily Direct Play 4K remotely as well.

Simply ensure your client devices support HEVC (x265) which is the most widely used format for 4K at the moment.

Any 4K capable device will support HEVC. A $20 Fire stick 4K supports HEVC as well as a $20 Onn 4K streaming stick from Walmart.

Please do your due diligence before spreading misinformation.

Thank you.
Will this stream 15-30gb 4k mkv streams without buffering via wifi?

Assuming you have a decent WiFi setup, yes it should be no problem at all to Direct Play videos of that size.

We're looking at less than 70 mbps of throughput for streaming something of that size (30 GB).

Easily achievable for these Synology units (any model).

Are you really arguing that Synology has superior hardware over QNAP? If so, you're the first person I have ever heard make that argument, and it can be debunked quickly with some very basic research. Synology puts QNAP to shame in the software department though.

Hell no! You can keep the best hardware if software is crap. Vice versa and you'll be fine and then some!

I wouldn't say the software is "crap." I would say it's second best. There's always room to improve and I'm sure it will as time goes on. The same can't be said for hardware. Hell, the 923+ is a complete failure in the transcoding department and that's unredeemable to me. But I'm interested in a NAS strictly for Plex, so I'm biased.

I'm unsurprised by the number of people twisting themselves into knots over transcoding as Synology do a terrible job of segmenting their lineup and articulating the benefits.

Just use Plex on the backend to organize media and Infuse on the device end to handle file compatibility and playback. Why even introduce transcoding into the discussion. 923+ will be more than capable of this.
