Your statement is useless without context.

"I'd rather pay $40 more for a model that nets me 4TB fewer because _______________."

I ordered 4 for my NAS the last time WD had a sale. One drive was DOA. It took me hours to prove it to WD that it was dead (you need to be able to plug it into a desktop computer, not a laptop, and run their software), and then it took WD weeks to replace it (with zero communication). They replaced it, a brand new DOA drive RMA'd within 2 days of receipt, with a refurbished unit and just said it was their policy. Buyer beware.

Most sucked. Only the $200 for 16TB and 18 TB shucked were the good deals. The 14TB for $150 was the best one from price per TB ratio. I'm still on the fence of going with these 20TB or keeping the 16TB seagates.
Was one of those that a Toshiba or HGST deal recently?

There is no warranty if you shuck a drive. That 2 yr warranty is voided because you opened and tampered the product. People here thinks they got a better deal because they shucked a portable drive but they don't realize they have no warranty at all.
That has been proven false

I mean, you just put it back in the enclosure if you need to send it in. It's not too hard. 🤷 ♂️

You can't tell I've tampered with my enclosure, but I've been told I have hands of a sturgeon

No. The 16TB was Seagate at B&H Photo. 18TB was WD at Best Buy. 14TB was Seagate at Costco.

Ah, that takes me back to that old nursery rhyme from my youth.

How many drives could a big fish shuck if a big fish could shuck drives?

Unfortunately these don't work with Synology NAS units. Just a heads up for anyone looking to buy them for a NAS.

As stated in the back-and-forth discussion in the linked thread you provide here, Syno NAS units are 100% "compatible" with larger-than-16TB HDDs, from all manufacturers. As conveyed by Synology when you call their techs and speak to them directly (not to mention outlined in various resources online), the "official compatibility list" is merely the in-house tested list of drives, and since Syno isn't going to test all drives on the market, regarding that compatibility list as a hard yes-no, approved-not-approved is a bad, bad idea. These 20TB Reds will absolutely work perfectly fine in a modern Syno NAS.

If anybody has a capital 1 card you should do an experiment. I checked the C1 shopping app last Friday and it was 9% cash back. The WD 18tb drives were $230 so it wasn't quite enough for me to jump, but I did open the WD page from the C1 shopping app.

The next day it showed 15% cash back and I ended up buying it for less than the best buy deal.

I was emailed a few days ago with another offer 22% cash back. Unfortunately I had already spent too much but I was shocked. Check your rewards folks!!

Backblaze has not found a difference between "enterprise" HDD and decent quality consumer drives.

In case it matters, the referenced Blackblaze article was from 10 years ago. Given that technology changes so fast, it would be helpful to have updated data.

There is updated data if you search the internet:

I wanted the HC560 but it's quite pricey and the price even increased because a big "A" player who manufactures chips for the HDD boards laid off a lot of employees. HC560 was about $379 now it's around $500.

I too had a bad experience RMAing an easystore drive that failed. It took literally months to get it straightened out. They kept sending the wrong drive like 3x and I had to send it back. Each time had to wait for slow two way shipping. It was a nightmare.

Sadly don't see this happening for me, any tips on how I can make it populate?

Does Western digital show up with any deals at all in your capital one shopping app?
If so, try adding something to your cart and attempt to check out (do this through their shopping app)

Don't check out and see if you get a better offer in a day or 2.

The 22% I got was emailed only after I had made a purchase and I have until February 1st to claim it

Sorry, this statement is incorrect. I just received 4x 20TB WD Red Pro and connected to my Synology DS923+ and the HDDs all spin up and detect perfectly. Note: I did see the incompatibility popup prior to installation but clicked on ahead.

FYI, with this setup on a SHR RAID type, there are 3x 18.2TB (available capacity for each 20TB HDD) = 54.6 TB available capacity.

You are right. Synology customer service told me that they would not work, but they do. I installed myself and can confirm they work. Sorry for the confusion. Synology needs to get their act together. It was unnecessary for them to tell me it wouldn't work.
