Yeah reviews on there should be considered on a different scale, basically anything that's a 7.0 is considering to be at the minimum decently good, and 7.6 is the really solid stuff, future board game hofer material. Cracking 8 range is the legendary tier of boards games (nemesis, root, tw4th, _haven)

For the most part below 7s are looked down on, the monopolys of the world, but there some in the 6.5-6.9 range that, while maybe mechanically pretty dull, can still be entertaining or at least and easy to teach with a newer group, but those are case by case basis, most are there for reason. 6.6 I'd expect to be a pass for myself as well 90% of the time bgg-wise. there's so many good reasonably priced 7+s these days why bother risking it

epilogue: if anyone cared enough to read all this trying to figure out a game to buy for you group, just go ahead and buy quacks of quedlinburg. you'll thank me later.

Should be just a themed version of the popular game for 2 players - really good price, in for 1.

Great original, not sure about this re-theme… I think it's a more limited Target version of the original, but it could still be a good introduction at < $9

Fun 2 player game. I have yet to win it. For some reason, my son always beats me at the end with a margin of 3-10

Not a Target exclusive. I found several copies of this 'Americana Edition' down the clearance isle of my nearest Walmart over the summer. Don't remember what I paid for it.

==edit==
Actually it was in late February of last year (2022) and I got it for $5

I have been browsing through BGG, and have concluded 7.6 is a higher score. I wasn't used to ratings on that site and they tend to skew what I considered low at first. I passed over some games in this sale which were 6.6 or so, and maybe those are good games?

Love the original version, great 2 player game (it's like tetris with drafting)!

I grabbed this during the B2G1 and cancelled two for a little cheaper than this. Great deal on a great game! A very solid choice for 2P nights

Looks like I ordered a little late and it became out of stock at my pick up location - however, Target is now shipping it out to me for free. Saves me a trip! I really should disable my deal alert for board games 😂

Yeah the scores there are on a bell type curve. Its very hard to get a 9-10 score out of people and then theres always people who don't like games that rate them low. Add it all up and decent games are often in the 7+ range. Also helps to know what the scores mean. like a 6 score is 'ok- will play if in the mood' vs a 10 is 'outstanding - will always enjoy playing'. So a 6 is not really a bad game, its just 'ok'. Whereas a 10 is a very high bar to hit for most. Another thing to realize is that the peole using BGG are more heavily into board games so you tend to get more picky grading from the scorers.

BGG also has game rankings that score the top games. I think those can be more helpful to me at least. There are 1000's of games up there so if a game has ranked in the top 100 or so then its a safe bet its a good game. Patchwork is the #20 family game and thats quite high:
https://boardgamegeek.com/familyg...rank=20#20

Another thing to look for is the award and nominations for the different best game or game of the year. If games get nominations then thats a good endorsement.

For example BGG has Patchwork listed with all these :

AWARDS & HONORS
2017 Guldbrikken Best Family Game Nominee
2017 Årets Spill Best Family Game Nominee
2017 Årets Spel Best Family Game Winner
2016 Lys Grand Public Finalist
2016 Juego del Año Finalist
2016 International Gamers Award - General Strategy: Two-players Nominee
2016 Gra Roku Game of the Year Nominee
2015 Spiel des Jahres Recommended
2015 Spiel der Spiele Special Prize Winner
2015 International Gamers Award - General Strategy: Two-players Nominee
2015 Hungarian Board Game Award Nominee
2015 Hra roku Recommended
2014 Meeples' Choice Nominee
2014 Golden Geek Best Abstract Board Game Winner
2014 Golden Geek Best Abstract Board Game Nominee

I'd say they are generally similar category. They are both similar level of complexity, generally family friendly kinda games and both games where you take turns selecting tiles to place on your board. Note that Patchwork is 2 player only.

I'd say they're not entirely dissimilar. Both games involve balance improving your own score vs. blocking your opponent(s) from improving their score, similar kinds of planning ahead, similar kinds of problem solving (although Patchwork requires more spatial awareness), similar complexity, and similar game length.

I'd say if you like one there is a decent chance you'd like the other. As has already been mentioned, this is two player only, where Azul is 2-4 players, and IMO excels at higher player counts (although it's good at two).
