Having an online eCommerce presence and maintaining those logistics is not cheap. If they have to serve nationwide customers, they'll need to keep a lot more inventory on hand, which will drive up costs. And they cannot afford to compete with larger retailers that enjoy cheaper shipping because of their volumes. Better to have a smaller local presence that's profitable than expand beyond their means.
This business model doesn't work for every retailer, but Microcenter is hardly the only big retailer that doesn't offer eCommerce based on an intentional business strategy -- Primark, Dollar General, Ross Stores are some that come to mind. You will note that all of these businesses sell a lot of low margin products. That's the same for microcenter. CPUs and GPUs are headline products but most computer hardware is low margin. Relatively speaking, not many people are into building their own PCs. That's why Microcenter prefers to have a smaller footprint, and maintain local presence in high population centers only. And by all accounts, it's a successful business model, as I remember reading that they are doing very well. They've said they intend to expand, but will do so very slowly. I would rather have a company that takes well considered decisions and expands slowly, than do it too soon and then lay off thousands of employees because of their lack of foresight.
Currently you can get the same build from
NewEgg for CPU $400 + Board $180 + RAM $98 = $678, and
Amazon for CPU $383 + Board $180 + RAM $105 = $668.
Looks like I'll wait for MicroCenter to open in Charlotte, soon...
