If you're running on the "unbeaten path" or offroad, you're going to be stepping on rocks/stones and you don't want them to poke through into the foam of the shoe. You will feel it. I had a running shoe with that exact problem so I went with a true trail running shoe (solid bottom of the shoe). I can now run over any rock and I don't feel it. Before it would hurt running over small pointy rocks.

The top trail runner (Killian Jornet) runs 100 mile ultras in shoes most people can't do a 5k. It's all personal preference.
These just didn't hit the mark. The s/lab series offer better performance and the ultra glide offer better support. That's why Salomon is getting rid of them.
