I dislike Luxottica's stranglehold over the sunglasses industry and Ray Bans have gone from decent and affordable sunglasses to kind of expensive in the last couple of decades. My eyes are especially sensitive to light, so sunglasses are a must. Unfortunately, I'm rough on sunglasses - I'm lucky if I have a cheap pair last me 6 months before the little scratches on the lenses accumulate and drive me mad. That said, my last pair of Clubmasters held up for over a decade of near daily use with practically no scratches on the lenses (they're glass, not polycarbonate). Total cost of ownership was under $8/year - actually pretty cheap comparatively. The hinge attachments started to get a little wonky so they didn't fit well anymore so I retired them. The quality isn't what it used to be though. I've got some Bausch and Lomb era aviators from the 80s that are still kicking it after nose pad replacements. They're big though, so the lenses are quite heavy (again, glass). I really only wear them when driving into the sun when I want the extra coverage. I took a look at Luxottica era Ray Ban aviators and they aren't nearly as nice (both looks and feel), but a quite a bit better than drugstore sunnies.
Maui Jim sunglasses from Costco are a bargain. Glass lenses, decent frames and a good price. Loved 'em until I lost them on the ocean. I don't have a Costco near me so I can't just pick up another pair. They're not part of the Luxottica family so you won't be supporting their artificially high prices. They'd be my budget recommendation for sunglasses.
Randolph Engineering sunglasses are where it's at but you'll need deeper pockets. Great optics and they feel like precision instruments. Sadly, I have yet to find a style that looks good on me. Bonus points for not being owned by Luxottica and being made in the US.
