There's other discounts on surface refurbs as well. I ordered the Surface Pro 5 (i5, 8g ram, 256 G ssd) - $209 and the Surface Pen- $18

Then ordered keyboard folio for $40 and cover case for $10.

Not too shabby. Going to be using it for videos, reading sheet music off it, Possibly even running reaper on it with my MAudio interface for some recording using Neural DSP Archetype GOJIRA. We'll see how well that holds up.

Considering Microsoft moving to ARM based laptops which come off as the closest to even match Apple ARM based laptops, I'm afraid if I'd be getting my hands on tech that I know is gonna become obsolete in a short time.

Otherwise it seems to be a fantastic piece of tech boasting specs at this price, I'd love to jump on. Thoughts?

Also, I wonder why they skimp on laptop webcams. Would it cost so much more to add a 1080p webcam to a top-spec laptop? Cheapo phones come with at least 1080p front facing camera and 2-4 rear cameras. Why's it so hard to do that in a laptop? #rant

Windows won't be fully transitioning the arm for a long time, if ever .

Apple has complete control over their ecosystem, they basically just decided X86 was obsolete and decided to transition arm. They aren't really designing new Intel computers anymore. Microsoft doesn't have that control, OEMs will continue making X86 laptops for the foreseeable future .

I can't imagine arm windows becoming the norm within the next 5 years.

I actually was going to go with an arm laptop, but Microsoft isn't even trying to get things compatible. Case and point, they haven't even tried to put out arm versions of the games they publish.

That's a 7th gen intel which means that laptop is probably at least 5 or 6 years old. I doubt if that battery has been replaced and I don't think you can do it yourself.

Edit: I am not talking about OP laptop. I am talking about the one this guy I quoted is buying.

Yup. That's my biggest concern. Gonna run battery benchmark tests as soon as I boot up. If it's concerning, gonna request a return. Deffo not going to replace the battery myself. It's an awful device from a repairability aspect. iFixit gave it a score of 1/10

It's a 11th gen processor, launched 2020. The machine is 2-3 years old.

Edit: My mistake, didn't see this is responding to a comment.

I think you got the timeline incorrect.

The Intel Core i7-1185G7 is a mobile processor with 4 cores, launched in September 2020. It is part of the Core i7 lineup, using the Willow Cove-U architecture with BGA 1449.

The fourth generation of Surface Laptop launched on 13 April 2021.

So this could be 3y and 2m old worst case.

To put things in perspective, Apple M1 was launched November 10, 2020.

You are correct. This is a decent laptop for this price. I've got the equivalent for work in a Surface 5 and really like it. My 5 does tend to get pretty hot. I am a programmer but don't do anything graphic intensive.

I was quoting the guy buying the surface tablet 5 which has a 7th gen intel processor:

And yet you still bought it. I have learned over the years, time and frustration is not worth the money savings. Plus I don't think returns with Woot is as easy as Amazon.

This is a good deal assuming battery health is good. I have the i5 512GB of this laptop and really like it. I have been dual booting it with KDE Neon and it defaults to Linux. Runs well.

x86 isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Unless Adobe, Autodesk, Steam, etc have staff to rewrite code, we're going to be with Intel/AMD for quite a while. The server market will basically see the most radical adoption as well as the Chromebook/Windows 11 AI editions
