From mackdack that I always use for reference :

DS224+ (also 920+, 423+, 220+, 720+, 1520+) supports 4k transcoding with inbuilt GPU (rest Synology does not or very incapable). Adding RAM also help in overall performance. DS224+ is Value buy for first time Plex users (add more RAM to make it 6GB . RAMs are very inexpensive )

QNAP TS-464 has everything you need for Plex but little expensive.

FYI: 4k transcoding is mostly needed when you want to play your Plex content on mobile/ipad (assuming you have plex pass). On home TV, you rarely need 4k transcoding.

For non-Plex users , most of the NAS are fine.

The 923+ does transcode, it just doesn't have GPU acceleration.

Some sites are offering 6% as well when purchased from Wally and then stack with 5% from Discover could be the best deal. Debating if we'll see cheaper from Amazon or not since it doesn't appear that Amazon sells it currently.
DS923+ currently $542.35 on Amazon from Synology store.
DS224+ currently $277 on Amazon from Synology store.

I'll wait for tomorrow morning.

To upgrade from a 2 bay synology drive to 4 or 5 bay, is all you do is take out the hard drives and place in new synology device? Can't believe I'm almost already used up 14TB of data. (2x 14tb drives)

If you don't need to migrate some data from service like "photo station" - just mark disks with numbers and insert it into new box. in the same order

I know! A few months ago a friend was describing how a NAS would be beneficial to me. I was backing up to a 14TB external drive and thought a three bay would be fine until I realized that I was nearly out of room on my external - so I got in on the last B&H DS923+ deal about a month ago. Since then, I've been educating myself with the aid of excellent Youtube videos and a multitude of genuinely helpful comments.

For my use, I'll buy the Synology 10Gb adapter, a 10Gb PCIe Network Card for my computer (mine only supports 2.5Gb) another 4G RAM, a QNAP QSW-2104-2T-A-US switch and probably (2) 500GB NVME drives for read/write and fill the four bays with 14TB drives.

Great price. The 224+ is actually pretty useful as a backup nas. Synology can do basically anything full image backup when it's backing up to another Synology nas.

I already have an Unraid setup for Plex so thinking about picking up 224+ just for photo/video backup and organization using synology Photos app. What hard drives with it? Also, do I need the 4GB RAM update?

I threw in a 16GB 2666 crucial stick I had laying around and it worked fine. Probably overkill but hasn't had an issue in 4+ months of use.

What is Wall Mart / New Egg's return policy? Days to return? Restock fee by New Egg?

Which model is best to store photos/video back up for our mobile phone?
I've been using Google Drive subscription. Thanks
Oh, and I have a 14TB WD Red pro still in the box
I have an older Synology NAS that doesn't have much in built-in features. I configured a NFS/SMB share and I have an app on my phone that syncs my photos thru that share on a nightly basis.

I have a 2-bay NAS. Sorry for the dumb question, but what are the benefits to upgrading to a 4-bay?
