From mackdack that I always use for reference :

DS224+ (also 920+, 423+, 220+, 720+, 1520+) supports 4k transcoding with inbuilt GPU (rest Synology does not or very incapable). Adding RAM also help in overall performance. DS224+ is Value buy for first time Plex users (add more RAM to make it 6GB . RAMs are very inexpensive )

QNAP TS-464 has everything you need for Plex but little expensive.

FYI: 4k transcoding is mostly needed when you want to play your Plex content on mobile/ipad (assuming you have plex pass). On home TV, you rarely need 4k transcoding.

For non-Plex users , most of the NAS are fine.

The 923+ does transcode, it just doesn't have GPU acceleration.

A question for the community. I'm thinking of purchasing this NAS (or the DS1522+ if it happens to go on sale in the next few days). However, I'll be giving up hardware transcoding I have on my current QNAP NAS. Hopefully, it won't be much of a problem since I've moved on to client side decoding via Infuse. However, I do feel a tinge of nervousness giving up key capability that I currently have. So, say in the future I end up having a need for hardware transcoding, what are my options? I've heard of people recommending having an NUC hooked up 24/7. Is that really viable? I.e. is it a relatively inexpensive option, that does not consume excessive power 24/7. And more importantly does that option provide good transcoding for 4K content. Is there a general consensus on what's the best approach?

Just wondering if I'm making a mistake by giving up hardware transcoding, and if I want it back, how feasible is it?

I understood most of what you said, but i'd be surprised if 90% of the people in this thread understood it.

You buy synology because of simplicity and reliability, not because you're a l33t haxor NAS expert.
Yes, have you seen the form factor of Hp Gen10plus it can fit 4x 3.5H and 2 more or 1 more ssd I believe..agreed if you have no tech skills or don't have time. Go for synology boxes, but they are severely gimped unless you Shell $$$$ for the higher priced ones. I have 1 DS1813, 2x HP n54l and 1x gen10 plus. The idea is not to build a big ass 10 bay Fractal Design XL ..I mean you can also DIY a good cheap NaS using Synology OS and have a much better plex experience and overall better specs vs synology cheap cpu ram models. You get good models with Synology too at the $$$$$ levels.

Also Xpenology doesn't take you to be a Linux coding expert. There are forums and guides for those willing to invest the time to learn and DIY. And DIY a NAS isn't as hard as replacing your Kohler toilet base. It's not 100 lbs etc. It just ..takes..some time.and effort needless to say it's not a 1 click install like synology.

No bueno if you have some tech skills and wanna DIY, the hp microserver gen 10 plus goes on ebay routinely for 300 400$ range or 550 perhaps much better ans stronger with ecc and can run Xpenology think synology BYOD.

Best fo both worlds but there is a learning curve. Best investment I did.
The value in Synology is its simplicity and DSM, which makes it very easy to support advanced NAS functionality and security for those who would rather not deal with the hassle of roll your own solutions, regardless of 'tech skills'.

They don't require synology branded ones. But if you use WD and have the WD diagnostics enabled you'll get a warning after a certain number of hours- I think something like 3 years.

Don't use WD or their diagnostics and you'll be fine. They support Seagate and Toshiba (Toshiba makes Synology branded drives).
This is only true for the 3.5" storage drives. If you use the m.2 slots in the 923+, you will need synology branded drives for read and write cache. You can use unbranded but it will only support read cache. Search synology 923+ m.2 on YouTube for vids on it

The DS224+ is the same price ($239.99 + $4.99 ship) on New Egg's eBay store. Not surprisingly and not the best price but I have some EBay credits so may go this route.

I put a couple random SSDs in there and was able to create a read write cache. Where have you read this? (Note I ended up getting rid of the cache when I realized it wouldn't really benefit me and had the potential for data loss)

You don't have to use synology but it has to be ECC memory. You can find compatible memory on Amazon. It is more expensive than non ECC. But less expensive than Synology branded.

For The NVMe slots, you do have to use synology drives if you want the SSD to be part of the storage pool.

Of you use other brands it would only be for caching.

You miss another point - electricity consumption. If you want to create custom build - you have to take care to proper configuration of hardware. Other way you will pay additional money as electricity bills all the time
Much worth situation when you buy xenon based server from ebay for $40 and pay other $1000 for 10 years of usage
