according to Paul P. from Amazon reviews:

"...this product is made with ethyl alcohol, which stinks! ethyl alcohol was used in the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic by companies, because of shortages in isopropyl alcohol. The stuff stinks really bad!.."

ethyl alcohol is confirmed as stated on the back label of the bottle.

While what Paul says may be true, there can be other reasons for why iso vs ethyl, plus with all the other additives in this particular product, a jump to conclusion that it's the ethyl that is stinking (at least Paul's specific "stink" smell).

Drinking 8 ounces of isopropyl will kill an average human, while ethyl is found aplenty at your local friendly bar- and not just the 120-proof (60% ABV) stuff. Pick your poison.

On a related note, i considered it laudable that distilleries rose to modify their processes to address the demand during the worse of COVID. They made some money and saved people that we will never know (until we can travel multi-verses).

Also since ethyl is slightly better at neutralizing viruses, you can safely rub it all over your ... lips ... (can you feel the burn?) in case of immediate intervention due to intimate viral contact.shake head

Iso is a tad better for bacteria, which is kinda odd considering how this is marketed.

fyi, more is not better - some water mixed in helps the alcohols physically get there:

Clarification: Ethanol (also called ethyl alcohol) is the drinking alcohol, but the 70% concentrations here are not safe to drink. Yup, even with all these yucky additives, those with AUD still go for it - without checking if it isn't methanol / isopropyl, which aer poisonous.

Thanks for the info and yes there are tradeoffs with the 2 types of alcohol used for hand sanitizer.

I had personally bought and used ethyl alcohol during the peak of Covid when any types of anti-virus alcohol were not available. I was so happy then to be able to buy four 1 gallon jugs of ethyl alcohol for an exorbitant amount of money.

My thought was to share them with friends and relatives. But it did smell pretty bad. I had to add a significant amount of lavender oil to cover up the smell. At the end, I wasn't able to give away the ethyl base sanitizer due to the smell and I still have a couple of jugs left.

there were many who complained about bad smell.

I had only bought gallon jugs from Costco, and caught Purell dispensers in sale. Those didn't smell but Purell added "fragrance", perhaps to mask?

Looked it up- the smelly part may be Pyridine. Manufacturers avoid paying higher booze-making (ethyl) taxes by denaturing(?)- making these undrinkable, adding nasty-smelling/tasting and isop/methanol poisons to sanitizer products.

Can't trust the labels on some products- FDA posted recalls on many, mainly for having methanol.

Yes, that is very probable. During the peak of Covid, people were willing to pay high prices for any types of sanitizer and manufacturers were scrambling to produce sanitizers and face masks with limited staff and supplies.

I am glad those days are behind us and hope they will never return in the future.
