As someone who owns many Lego games but has never played more than 30-40min (aside from undercover and worlds), at what point do narrative Lego games hit their stride or are they more an excuse to play co-op with family/friends?

It really depends on the game. Undercover is one of the best in my opinion. The star wars games are as well. Lego movie 2 is very bleh to me. I play them with my kids and that's the most fun.
