m12 has great automotive tools that are compact. often have sales. m12 lights are incredible. ergonomics on the impact driver and drill are awful.

makita 18v is a much larger battery system. makita does not have a lot of sales for desirable tools. ergonomics are incredible.

i own both. i go with what's the cheapest and on sale. i often find myself wishing i stuck with one battery platform that essentially good ergonomics, good sale prices (holidays).

I originally bought the M1 12 impact driver and hammer drill, but I returned it. and got the subcompact. fell in love with ergonomics. then i upgraded to the flagship 18v impact driver on sale, which may not be the strongest on numbers alone but it's an absolute gem to use for projects at home. love my makita tools, wish they had better sales. their XWT impact wrench is amazing (got it on amazon used for $100) and their mid torque ($140 amazon used) . but the full price is ridiculous and i'll never pay the full asking price for that when cheaper alternatives exist.
