This is an excellent bike for commuting and running errands. It's great because there's nothing at all weird about it. It's just a normal bike, with durable, normal components, in normal sizes. You won't have trouble finding a seat post, or new grips, or pedals. No bike shop will ever refuse to work on it because it's weird or low end.

The bottom bracket is a square taper. All those micro shift components use the Shimano 7 speed SIS pull ratio that has existed since the 80s. Shifter breaks? No problem, any Shimano SIS road 7, 8, 9 speed shifter can replace it. Community bike co-op bins are full of them for $5. Same deal with the derailleur. Shimano made millions of rear derailleurs that can replace that one and be compatible with that shifter.

The handlebars are 31.8mm, the seat post is 27.2mm, the fork steerer is 1 1/8th". These are all the most common dimensions. Need a set back seat post? $5 at a co-op. Want a higher ride stem or swept back handlebars? $5. Someone steals your wheel? Co-op, $20. Riding in the rain? This has mounts for fenders. Want a basket to carry stuff? There are mounts for racks, front and rear.

These are the sorts of deals I love seeing on Slickdeals. This is a bike that will last a lifetime because it's easily, and cheaply, repairable should anything go wrong.
Looks like $100 difference ($350 vs $250). I'd buy the Specialized because if I had to sell it, I'd probably make that $100 back on resale value and it'll be sold alot faster. If this is gonna be a grocery getter, the Mendham might be fine as it'll probably never be stolen (no one knows/wants a Mendham).
