It's just marketing.

When you check out through the Home Depot website, you will actually be charged an amount on the receipt for the "free" tool.

So when you return it, they will credit that amount back to you as well.

This 'deal' has been going on since early November (or late October).

Now that Xmas has passed, you might want to wait for Home Depot to clearance price these kits. Most stores still have way too many left over in stock because it wasn't a very good deal to begin with.

This kit should've been like $120-ish and then you 'hack' the deal from there.

Does homedepot only does clearance price in-store or online?

You must be new here... Home Depot literally does, along with at least a couple other retailers.

I went with the $200 6 tool / 2 bat package. Then I found a special for 2 bats and a killer hand vac for $80 that's my new favorite tool around the house lol.

Can't believe these hacks are still allowed but I shouldn't complain. Allowed me to build up a huge stash of Ryobi tools for cheap lol

Some stores have caught on. Local HD manager won't accept the returns unless you return the entire "bundle". I hear people arguing about it all the time in the CS line when I'm picking up orders.

There's no terms that specifically allow it so they can deny the return.

Edit: Most recent exchange I heard went like this:
"I want to return this"
You'll have to return the set and rebuy the individual item since it was part of a "buy x and get y" deal.
"But it has its own price on the receipt"
But you had to buy both together to get that price per item. You no longer meet that criteria.
"What if it's broken and I want to return it"
You can return the whole kit or we can replace the broken item.
And so on.

I usually order them through 2 separate stores and don't pick up one, a week later it gets cancelled. You pick up the item you want from the one store sooner.
