The Lenovo with the exact same specs for $399 last summer was the killer deal. Sadly, I was traveling and away and never thought it would be a 1 time deal so i missed out.

Here's the Dell product page [dell.com] if you want to check the rest of the specs. Seems like a decent deal.

And here's the owner's manual [dell.com]. It shows 3 different power supplies, the smallest is 180W (which is probably what this one ships with), so don't expect to run a powerful GPU with that.

This system provides a reasonable value but the trade-off is the incorporation of relatively custom components in the form of an OEM motherboard and power supply.

This power supply is a 12 Volt Only style model. That style distinction is significant since although OEMs have started implementing their own versions of ATX 12VO for cost-savings as well as to meet certain efficiency requirements, what is being sold in OEM systems isn't really standardized in the retail space. So if the power supply needs replacement (outside of warranty) or upgrading, this challenge alone will create some issues well beyond a simple drive to Micro Center.

As such, this recommends at least three possible approaches:
  1. Operate this system as a sealed box with limited to power-neutral upgrades for its lifetime (so only swapping in CPUs or GPUs which are supported within the existing power budget). This works for a large group of users and represents the target audience of this kind of pre-built.
  2. Be the kind of DIY-er who cuts into power supply wires, uses custom power supply wire harnesses, or runs dual power supplies in a PC as part of their GPU upgrade (nothing unimaginable, but definitely a niche group).
  3. Ignore this kind of highly custom OEM system in favor of a PC which utilizes standardized motherboards and power supplies.
Good luck!
Jon

The larger power supplies would incorporate a GPU accessory power connector. I believe you correctly guess that this model will ship with the smallest power supply model which should also lack any support for GPU accessory power. As such, any graphics cards considered for this system should (in the best case) be limited to those which operately solely off the 75W PCIe power budget. Those considering possible GPU upgrades, potentially compatible models which come in variants without accessory power connector(s) includes:
  • RX 6400
  • GTX 1650 (select implementations)
  • RTX 3050 (2024 models)
Good luck!

I don't know about the physical size, but it's pretty easy to find adapters on Amazon or eBay to convert a standard ATX motherboard connector to a Dell one.

Physical size is indeed a problem as the OEM power supplies are not standard ATX form factor models. In fact, most documentation suggests a form factor incompatible even with the small but increasingly common SFX power supplies. Flex ATX (ITX) power supplies could likely sit inside the case, but aren't exactly a perfect exchange (and are relatively harder to find).

Anyone willing to consider working with a standard power supply (leaving off a side panel, or perhaps cutting into the case) would indeed find that power adapters are commonplace from third parties on Amazon, eBay sellers, etc. However, these adapters recommend careful consideration and at least a basic understanding of the associated power supply and motherboard connector voltage pins.

Good luck!

Does anyone know how many drive bays this has to add extra 3.5" hard drives to the inside? All I could find was that it had two SATA 3.0 slots for 3.5" drives (from a dell website on model 3030), it didn't specifically call out drive bays.

You might have already seen this, from Dell.com

Your Inspiron 3030 supports one of the following storage configurations:
One 3.5-inch hard drive
One 3.5-inch hard drive + one M.2 2230/2280 solid-state drive
One M.2 2230/2280 solid-state drive
The primary drive of your Inspiron 3030 varies with the storage configuration. For computers: With a M.2 solid-state drive, the M.2 solid-state drive is the primary drive

Any recommendations for something like this in the 200-300 range? I don't need anything this powerful really (office 365 and web browsing) - and it's out of stock now.

For $200-$300 I think you're looking at a refurbished unit. I was sold on this deal for the specs and Costco warranty.
Another deal from Costco for $499 https://www.costco.com/hp-pavilio...41375.html

Retired friend was running a Lenovo i5 1st gen and the 2nd hard drive failed 2 weeks ago. Very price sensitive. Found him a off lease business computer on Woot and he's very happy with it. i5 8th gen, with 16gb ram and 512gb SSD and free shipping with Prime. $6 without. $220 plus tax. Warranty: 1 Year CNB Computers. Don't know much about that company.

Would fit your use case quite well. Or pick up a cheap laptop on SD.
