Probably less people buying expensive-ass paint given the plummeting economy.

Employee said she hasn't seen 50% (or BOGO) off all paints in years. This is a great deal.

I need some white exterior paint for the house. Is A100 paint good enough or should I look at a higher end kind of paint?

thanks.

For those DIYers considering getting the most expensive "urethane" based paint: unless you have used it previously and know you like it, seriously reconsider the choice.

We are actively finishing up a big DIY project in which we are using the top-end Emerald "urethane" based paint ($~100/gallon) for the first time. It's literally been 24 years since I have wasted so much precious time on paint.

We've used several cans of white and a very dark color on huge custom bookshelves and have had so many problems. Needing MANY extra coats, brush stroke issues, and receiving scuffs well past the "cure" time. I'm seriously not joking-- if SW called and said hey come get 12 gallons of the urethane for free in your hoise, I would say no ty.. The eventual finished product looks great, but the trouble with getting the brush application executed perfectly was a disaster and took away the one thing you in life you cannot buy---time.

We've used SW Super Paint as well and had zero problems and I will definitely be buying more of that.
I've found Benjamin Moore Advanced much better for brushing. The downside is the drying time for larger projects of course.

They had this deal last year about this time, but I'd never seen it before last year and I've been watching SW sales for a long time.

As a note, you can buy SW paint untinted, and bring it back later for tinting. However, you need to know which base and sheen you want - SW won't take returns of gallons to switch for another base/sheen.

Use SuperPaint at minimum - I've used that for exteriors in the Satin sheen and it held up well in the Pacific NW. Someone else recommended the satin, and I really liked that, plus it seemed to provide less of an optimal surface for things like mildew to adhere to and grow.

Some people like Duration for exterior - it can be applied in cooler temps although optimally, wait until it's above 50 degrees. Ideally, surface has been dry for a couple of days, and will stay dry for another couple. Price difference might not be much with this deal. I've been very satisfied with SuperPaint and never bothered with Duration.

With both paints, SW says it can get wet sooner, but I don't think that's an ideal scenario.

Of course, proper prep is important - without this, no paint will hold up well over time. I scrub with a brush on a pole and spray with a garden hose (no pressure washer as those can damage siding), usually using TSP-PF (HD sells). If I haven't previously painted the surface (i.e., it's been painted, but not by me), I will generally use a primer like Zinsser 123. That's been my approach to several houses, and it seems to have worked well and held up well.

West and south facing exteriors get more sun and you may need to repaint those sooner. Of course, in your regular annual maintenance checks of the house, assess the paint condition. In the PNW, SuperPaint held up for 10 years on South & West facing sides - the problem was more the sun was causing other maintenance issues that I had to address (and the paint was probably ready for a re-paint).. North & East would have lasted longer, but I repainted those at the same time.

For those of you using these higher end paints what to you recommend for a roller… both handle and roller covers? Seems like one shouldn't pay a lot for paint but then use a cheap roller set up. Thanks!!
What you want for a roller depends in part on the texture of the surface you're painting and what you're painting. A smooth house siding uses a different roller than what you'd use for cupboards. If you google, you can probably find some suggestions for your project. You can also call or go to SW and ask for their advice.

I checked. Contractor pricing was $3 cheaper (total) for two gallons of Duration. If the $10 coupon works, then BOGO would be cheaper.

Edit: Gonna stop by SW today and ask them about Emerald. I've been in my house 30 years now and have always used Duration inside & out. I don't need to do any major painting, just touchup. I usually just take my label in, they scan the bar code and mix me a gallon. I don't know if switching to Emerald will allow me to do touchup easily (if that makes sense.) I've been pleased with Duration. The only rooms that I have had to repaint in those 30 years are the bathrooms and the kitchen. All other rooms are pristine (with an occasional touchup.)

About 20% higher than contractor pricing after bogo.

Emerald was only 50 or 60 bucks 5 years ago. It seems SW paint has gone up by a higher percentage since Covid, than Behr. I wonder why?

Contractor pricing varies considerably. In an earlier SW thread, one contractor was getting his paint for ~ 30% less that I could get it using contractor pricing due to him being a huge customer.

We don't know what you were getting off list price to figure out, how much less he was getting.

This is what's gonna happen, you most likely have to buy a gallon at regular price which is outrageous and usually covers the cost for both gallons, bet if I went in with my contractor discount they won't give me a second one for free 🤘🏽

The had this same deal last year around the same time.
The deal from last year was a bit better for maybe like 1-2 days(?). Somehow there was a percentage off applied before the BOGO was applied. But after that day or two, it was back to BOGO. I think their BOGO deal is their best sale for the year. The other sales are lower percentages and sometimes are limited to certain products (like the one that just ended 40% off only for emerald product).

As many had said, the price is probably similar to Behr or other brands with BOGO.

SW will tint them later if you buy them untinted. I guess also depending on location, they can exchange the base if the tint you want requires a different base from what you had purchased (after the 30 day return window). I also had luck with exchanging for another sheen without extra charge, although it was going from a sheen that cost more to a sheen that cost less. Even though I didn't get a refund for the difference, it was still better since the price originally paid is lower than if I had to return them and buy the other sheen even at their regular 30% off sale.
