WTF? I've been using pigtail dongles starting with Apple's USB 100BaseT and Apple's TB3 1000BaseT adapters, and many cheap chinese USB 1GbE or 2.5GbE adapters since then. All have worked fine though some of them were power hungry.

What broke for you, and why will it break for others?

I've tested USB-C -> Ethernet dongles with android phones and tablets before and had success.

I have one of these and it worked fine before I concluded 1gbps on my m4 mac mini was enough and that I cared more about having a clean desk. Has been working fine on my blue iris security cam desktop since then with no strain relief, just dangling there.

Good price to put in to place immediately or keep in the nerd tool bag.

Yup, I have a couple of USB C docks with Ethernet that work with my iPad. Comes in quite handy when trying to troubleshoot/configure networking equipment.

Don't get any ethernet adapter that's on a pigtail cable, it goes bad quite fast. Just stick with a USBA one piece eth dongle no cable.

No, you'd need USB A to 2.5

It should since the ROG Ally is just a handheld windows PC. Just keep in mind if you have the original ROG Ally, you will need to have a dock with extra USB-C or you won't be able to use this dongle and charge the ally at the same time since those only come with 1 USB-C port.

It should work out of the box. Personally I find something like the below (I don't own this exact model) a better fit for my Steam Deck. Adds ethernet, external displays, still allows charging pass through, and also a bunch of other features for roughly the same price. The ethernet is slower though, but I doubt you'd actually need 2.5 Gbps on your Ally...but I could be wrong.

*this is just a random example, not suggesting you buy this exact item

It should unless the power draw is too much for the phone to provide. I've used a USB-C dock for a laptop to charge my phone and it did provide ethernet and video out!
