I think the home depot for the 40lb bag of this and 30lb of the yellow bag for $75 total was better

Or upsize to the larger bags at Lowe's for $75:

Home Depot is offering the same deal in a roundabout way:

I'm looking at the Home depot deal because Lowes is out of everything in my area. I'm still not sure which is the best deal at Home depot, or if it's a good deal. I gotta pull out a slide rule for this! Where's everyone else going? Which deal? I think the smaller deal is better than the largest deal at HD.

The larger deal is 3x the product for less than 3x the cost. Typical economy of scale. Just depends what you need.

NOT actually FREE, since the Lowes offer is for $27, so you are basically paying $7 for the weed and feed, still not a bad deal. But these are only like 10lb bags. You can get 40lb bags of weed and feed from non-Scotts brands for a just a little more than Scotts 10lb bag. You are probably paying a lot more for Scotts because they spend millions on ads!!

Newbie here - our landscaper told us that Scott's is "trash" because of the fillers used and we're better off with Jonathan green. Is there merit to this or is he crazy?

N-P-K plus any micros are what is important. Brands become preferences, and often some brands indeed have better features, eg. slow release coatings, particle size, etc.

Can you grow new seed with Halts or do I need the Scott's triple action?

My tip from experience and having a father in law that was a nutjob when it came to having a nice lawn (backhanded compliment lol). Pre-emergent crabgrass treatment should be put down right as the forsythias in the neighborhood start to bloom (to the newbies, they are the yellow flowered bushes found everywhere in NJ). This is for northern NJ at least. Pre-emergent treatment is key, kill it as it's trying to sprout. The best defense against crabgrass and weeds is a thick healthy lawn.

Don't try and grow new seed with Halts.

There are two different types of triple action….ONE says it's safe for seeding.

The trick with seeding is to never let the seeds dry out. Typically requires a sprinkler system and watering 4-5 x a day for shorter periods of time ….generally 10-15 minutes each time.
Have to do that for almost 3 weeks.

It's typically easiest to grow starting in the beginning of September….at least for cool season grasses.
