Any suggestions on another retro emulation handheld that's comfortable in the hands?

This is actually quite common with budget electronic devices with USB-C ports. No resistors for slow charging, and no power management subsystem for negotiating fast charging. The result is a fire hazard. The Li-ion battery in those devices can be damaged by charging from the wrong cable or charger, increasing the likelihood of a rupture and fire.
So if you don't want to have to keep a 5V/1.5A charger around specifically for your retro handheld, this may very well be your cheapest option. The next cheapest one I know of is the Miyoo Mini v4 at about $35 USD on sale.
It's nice because it's small and the battery is pretty dang good. The screen on this one limits what it can do more than anything. For Gameboy and GBA it's incredible, but the resolution is low compared to things like the R36S.
If you want something for your Gameboy Advanced library, look no further - this thing is awesome. But look elsewhere if you want more options.
