Am I the only one who thought the drive was encased in an old vacuum tube?
I shucked this one the last time it was on sale and used it for a Thinkpad that only accepts smaller form factor (M.2 2242) SSDs.

It has DRAM and is cheaper than a typical 2242 NVME drive which tend to go for a 100 bucks.

It was easy to pry and pull apart for disassembly. As a bonus, you can put other drives in it too and use them as USB sticks.

Is this good to backup stuff like pictures, documents, MP3's or is it more for gaming and faster booting up etc?

I plan to use it as a cache drive for my router with USB A connector. If you need only an external SSD I use a real NVME SSD in a thunderbolt enclosure for more capacity and higher speeds.

Would this be appropriate for a retro pi? I don't know how the device failure rate compares to a micro sd card

Curious what's the use cases for this thumb drive? Too much disk space for Tails. I guess one could make it a fast bootable Win 11 OS thumb drive instead of using a SSD. Perhaps sharing mkvs with friends (instead of sharing via Jellyfin).

Yes. I added that to my original deal description which got overwritten when going frontpage. It was sold for $60 during Black Friday and $62 beginning of November last year. But not sure if we see this price in the near future again/prior to Black Friday.
