Check out the NAScompares channel on YouTube, he's likely done a deep drive on that model with transcoding tests in Plex, and you can also learn what's new on the incoming 2025 models (basically just 2.5GbE)
I have this exact NAS and it works great for my Plex server and as a photo backup replacement instead of paying Google. I recommend it, but I've already outgrown the 2 bays in a little over a year, FYI
DS923+ is also on sale at BH. Waiting for the 1522+ to go on sale 😬

Ahh wow I maybe would have bought this for this price if this deal was a week ago. Bought a GMKTec mini PC NAS for about 300$ but it came with 2tb SSD and 8gb ram. Pretty satisfied with that, although took some setup to get it to where I needed it (ok mainly a lot of research on what OS to use). But this deal seems pretty solid for those looking for a NAS.

Asking for clarification: Do you mean at normal MSRP or do you mean released on sale?
The way things are going with consumer electronics in 2025, MSRP might as well be a sale price. 🙂

Still waiting for a previous low of $239.99 I was counting on this model going on sale over Black Friday/Cyber Monday but don't think it ever did.
I guess this price is ok but if a new model is coming out it'd be nice if it was discounted more.

Been using this DS224+ for about 1.5 years now and loving it. I threw in a 8gb stick of ram so its running 10gb (overkill but oh well).

Did you upgrade the ram, and can you let us know how well object/face recognition works? I really want to get this done because the online storage I've been paying yearly still did not implement face recognition and it's driving me crazy.
No Ram upgrade but decided to pair with the N100 mini PC (as many people do). No complaints. Will only be as fast as your internet connection. I luckily have 1GB Fios so it's solid.

As far as Object/Face recognition - it seems to work? I'm not sure what you're used to. Is it Google good? Nah. Is it functional? Well I input "Cat" and it worked. I input my wife's name and it worked. So yeah seems to work fine. I think I may have gone through and "taught" it faces at one point, but that was a while back. For free, it does the job. I still use Google Images on their free tier and it's fine (constant hounding about storage at 80% notwithstanding), I just remove photos as the months progress, knowing they're backed up on Synology. Synology's mobile photo app is fine too. I'm sure there's better out there, but I haven't found it - not for free at least.

For people mentioning facial recognition, QNAP has been doing that for many years now with their NAS and it works really well. They do recommend their 4GB models for optimal performance but their newer NAS boxes even with 2GB of RAM now have NPU's installed just for facial recognition, but it should still run on their lower models as long as they have 64Bit processors and not the 32Bit ARM models which are now becoming rare.

An example of a $200 entry level 2 Bay NAS just for the people who want photos, facial recognition, and cloud access (When on sale this can probably get around $150 or less price points):

The 2025 models are coming out shortly; they are likely clearing inventory of these 2023/2024 models.

But the deal is one day only so I'm assuming if Amazon is price matching B&H it'll be full price by tomorrow.
Edit: I guess if they don't ship it immediately you won't be charged until April so maybe that will work. 🤷 ♂️

5% CB (~$13 in ultimate rewards points) vs having the B&H payboo credit card that pays you back the sales tax.
for me, saving the sales tax of 10% is ~$26.

No old hardware & plastic case @ a premium price.
I have this model. It's a metal case and works perfectly for Plex.

Additionally, while Synology says the max ram is 4gb. it's actually 18gb (2gb onboard + 16gb SODIMM).

Just when you think two bays is enough you realize that you need four bays. Just get the 4-bay.
