It's worth noting that the TX-8220 is a 2 channel stereo receiver. No video. Completely different use case than the TX-SR3100
Better to spend $200 then, as opposed to $1k. I agree though. All we need is some new codec to become popular and all our gear is for the garage
No phono in, if that matters to people.

The TX-8220 model has it, for this same sale price on Amazon.

If you're into cheap turntables, they will have one installed. If you're into high end turntables, you'd NEVER use a phono built into a DVR

The comment was for the ones you didn't mention. Not into cheap turntables or high end. The ones who still have one from the past, or are buying used. Which would be most, probably.

Just counted over 90 of these "open box" from Adorama, alone... on eBay.

The returns must be crazy.

Why else would they have so many?

Would the Onkyo TX-SR3100 or the Integra DRX-3.4 (currently on sale) sound better with a pair of Klipsch Reference Premiere speakers and subwoofer?

Yeah I was seriously considering it, until I saw all the open box inventory. Without I decent explanation, I have NO intention of pulling the trigger.

I just use ARC and don't bother with all the codecs and other stuff that makes each receiver better. Dirac seems legit tho, obviously a completely different market of receiver.

This is a fine low end receiver if it covers your needs. I recently purchased one, and it works fine for me, but it has very few inputs/outputs/features compared to most receivers and its scaling capabilities are minimal. Make sure to check the ports and specs before buying, if your needs are at all beyond the simplest.

I consider myself to be pretty tech savvy and well informed. I almost pulled the trigger before noticing it has no network connectivity (wifi/Ethernet) and that the USB port can't be used to play music. I'm willing to bet that most of those returns are from people that didn't notice these features were missing until after they opened it. The other key feature that's missing (at least according to the manual) is the ability to change the equalizer settings after running AccuEQ. All of Onkyo's more expensive models allow you to do this according to their respective manuals.

Noob question here. I already have a nice pair of active speakers (Edifier R1280DB) , but I slowly want to upgrade to a 5.1 system with a receiver. It looks like the back of this Onkyo receiver has one pre-amp line out next to the subwoofer pre-amp out. I know this wouldn't be a typical setup, as I eventually want to buy passive speakers. But can I use my current active speakers with this receiver (pre-out from receiver to line-in on speakers). I think this would work, as the active speakers do the amplification, not the receiver. According to some research, this should work as long as i dont have the active and passive speakers on the same channel, right?

lol... literally, the first thing when I pressed the power button... "CALL CUSTOMER SUPPORT. NG: LCRSLSR"
So... I professionally repair home theater receivers for a living. This error code means that there's probably a shorted MOSFET (transistor) or 2 and possibly a couple of bad resistors. Whoever refurbishes receivers for Adorama did a piss poor job here. It said "Excellent" condition. I called Adorama and they said their repairs are done 3rd party.
Shitty first impression.

Curious why you would buy such a crappy receiver for $200 when you could get a much better used receiver for the same money or much less? I picked up a used Yamaha that is much better than this for $40, and I can't even repair them.

I went ahead and pulled the trigger on one. My old Yamaha RX-V367 was starting to spit static and turn itself off randomly. I have a set of Klipsch Synergy F1s and a JBL S-Center II (cheap RCA surrounds and a JBL 10" sub). I hope this handles them well.
