Quote from JL5 :
When talking about sharing of the software across multiple computers, The download link can be used multiple times to download the software (the companies have to allow for this if they are not going to provide the physical software on a CD/DVD). If the software is installed on different computers...any state program can be downloaded for "that computer". The most simple way, albeit technical, to install multiple State Programs on to one computer would be to use a Virtual Machine (VM) (ex. Virtual Box, VMWare). A backup file of the Federal Return (which H&R Blocks creates) can be put on another computer (or VM)...so that the vast majority of the Federal data is incorporated into the State program.I print, sign, and mail in my State Income Tax return (along w/a check for the tax I owe). I eFile the Federal return (using one of the FIVE (5) Free Federal eFiles that comes w/the H&R Block software (using the Product Key you get when you purchase the product). Here's a crazy example to the extreme.Say there was FIVE friends on SlickDeals.. from 5 different states (that require tax filing). They could each chip in and one of them would purchase the software. All Five could use the same download link to download the H&R Block software to each of their computers. They would then also download their individual State portion of the H&R Block State tax software. When each of them installs the initial software they would input the same product key that came with the purchase of the product (usually sent in an e-mail).As long as each of the five friends only eFiled ONE (1) Federal Tax Return, using only ONE (1) use of the Product Key...everyone would be able to file separately. Further, each could also complete their individual state return, print it...and mail it in to their state. (or they could pay H&R Block to eFile the State Return. (I'm not sure if H&R Block would pick up that the same Product Key was filing five different states (probably not, because at that point, the State Program is looking for payment for the State eFile (unless you live in NY State))).Now, I've only summarized an extreme use for entertainment purposes only...I've ignored all legal and moral principals in my entertaining version...
Good to know. Well, my friends are probably too rich to share tax software. Thanks for the insight.

Try OLT. It does a bit more than FreeTaxUSA.

FreeTaxUSA supports some K1s but not others. If you did the federal first, it should have caught that before charging you for state.

Thanks! I'll give OLT a try.
Exactly, it should have caught that right away, when I was entering data.

They should give you a refund. What a pain in the butt all of this is!
