1. Effectiveness Against Mosquitoes
Bug zappers, including the BLACK+DECKER models, are generally less effective against mosquitoes than advertised. Studies and expert reviews indicate that these devices tend to kill a broad range of insects—mostly non-biting and beneficial species—while only a small fraction of the catch are mosquitoes.
Multiple users and experts note that zappers attract and kill more moths and other harmless insects than actual mosquitoes.
2. Environmental Impact
The indiscriminate killing of insects can disrupt local ecosystems by eliminating pollinators and natural pest predators. This is a significant concern raised by entomologists and environmental experts.
3. Maintenance
The zapper requires regular cleaning, as dead insects can quickly accumulate on the grid. Some users find this process inconvenient and note that cleaning could be easier.
4. Build Quality and Reliability
Reviews are mixed regarding build quality. Some users report satisfaction with its durability, while others mention malfunctions or breakdowns shortly after purchase7.
Issues with power source compatibility, such as circuit breakers tripping or bulbs failing, have also been reported.
5. Health and Safety Concerns
When insects are electrocuted, their body parts can be dispersed into the air, potentially spreading bacteria or allergens. This is especially a concern if the zapper is placed near food preparation or dining areas.
6. Attracting More Pests
Bug zappers can attract pests that might not have otherwise been drawn to your area, potentially increasing the presence of unwanted insects.

Mosquitos are very local. If you see a lot of them in your backyard, they likely came out of a puddle nearby. The only thing that works for us in the summer is to be super disciplined about avoiding any standing water around the house and then placing a few small water containers with mosquito dunks around the property. It's basically a bio weapon that only kills mosquito larvae. You will need to check on those frequently and replace the dunks monthly. It's a bit of effort but I think it works and it doesn't affect the beneficial insects
