If that fails (no matching size in the kit, etc), find an equivalent hardened bolt and nut at ACE.
- metric grade 10.9
- standard SAE J429 Grade 8
Then, using a file, jigsaw, or a dremel, score 3-4 perpendicular lines full length of the bolt threads or nut threads.Use this for your problem and add this to your rethreading kit!
This matches how the items in the rethreading kit are designed.
IMO it cleans up bad threads in the hole and on the bolt.
Done this twice. Once for a brake control unit; once for an axle nut that crossthreaded the threads on the axle!
I learned of this on YT (of course). Before so, I was scratching my head on how to fix the issue.
I bought a complete Tap and Die set, and have never once used it successfully for a crossthreaded hole or bolt. I always grab my rethreading kit and hit ACE when I come upon a new size not in the kit.

However, knowing what I know now, buying bolts and nuts and making the slits works also.
