Best Cheap Beer - Simpler Times at Trader Joe's - $2.99/6-pack

I saw a post about an AB product being a good buy in AZ. The usual beer bashing good fun continues in that thread.

I started this thread to let SDers know about Simpler Times beer at Trader Joe's.

You will not find a better beer for $2.99 a 6-pack anywhere! Comes in Lager and Pilsner.

Here's a link for where to find a Trader Joe's [traderjoes.com]near you.

I like several other beers and enjoy sampling micro-brews, and there are craft beers that are better than this one - but in terms of beer for the buck, this one is hard to beat!

Just picked up a case today, saw the other AB beer thread, and thought that SDers should know about this best cheap beer for the buck!

Hope all fellow cheap beer drinkers enjoy! yummy

Note to self: If you post about beer, there is no failing.

second note: unless it's crap beer. then it's a toss-up.

third note: drink more ipa

fourth note: beer snobs are (cigarrette butts)

Wow, that sounds pretty awesome. Do all Trader Joe's sell beer, or just a few select ones? I can't for the life of me remember mine (NJ) selling alcohol..

edit: Damn, looks like VERY few, if any, sell alcohol anywhere near my area. Asterisks on the store locator indicate that they do not sell alcohol, and asterisks abound around the East Coast, it seems.. Frown

I know "good beer" is very subjective, but here's an interesting discussion:

Wow - they really trashed it on the site! EEK!

I looked at the top rated beer on that beeradvocate website - the top 100 all look to be specialized craft beer (most with very high alcohol content).

I suppose this cheap beer would not sit well with high end beer efficianados.

Likewise I know what I would probably do if I drank 6 of their #1 rated "Pliny The Younger
American Double / Imperial IPA / 11.00% ABV"... vomit

To each their own... Smilie

It has more flavor than bud light.

If you like bud light I'd recommend trying the Pilsner.

If you like a little more body I'd recommend the Lager.

I originally bought a 6-pack of each and liked them both. Now I just buy the Lager out of personal preference.

Hope you like it if you decide to try it! Smilie

C+ is a good score for a cheap beer at beer advocate, which contains the largest beer snobs on the planet, who can only possibly highly rate extremely rare or extremely expensive beers, like the sam adams utopia at 200 dollars a bottle, or some beer made for 1 month of the year by trappist monks in a small reserve in england.

That being said its good to compare beer to beer and decide which to try, just dont take their low ratings too seriously as people will automatically give it an F just because its cheap or a popular brand name.

I dont really drink beer this cheap, had bad experiences. but I love trader joes and would want to try this.. they just dont have liqour licenses around here.

This is the typical price for "Simpler Times". Not slick by any means.

I drink pretty much all kinds of beers with "Natural" being my every day beer, but that "simpler times" stuff is horrible.

Good price for a good beer. If you do not agree, then you by definition are a beer snob. Flame On, flamers.

there's a few on there that give this a "b" which is saying something though. I'm definitely gonna pick some up my next trip to tj.

i don't mind drinking lagers as most places won't serve anything else but if i go to a store to buy beer, i buy for taste which IMO is better value than trying to get a 6 pack for under $5. A couple of good bang for your buck beers I've encountered are Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout which comes in a 4-pack for 5.99-6.99 and Rogue Mocha Porter which can be had for 7.99 a 6-pack.

Sure BeerAdvocate reviewers can be "snobs" but once you start experiencing anything beyond run of the mill, it's difficult to view things of lesser quality in the same light. That line of thought can be applied to just about anything. Is a person a snob just because he or she has experienced and prefers something better? It's like going from American DJ turntables to a pair of Technics 1200s... you'll never want to play on the ADJs ever again.

My friends and I actually drink this quite often. I really like the taste, especially for $3 a 6-pack. Hard to beat that!

Haven't bought beer in Trader Joe's since I've moved about 5 years ago, yet I remember trying most of the 'cheap' beers they sold previous to that. Personally, I thought the best of the ones I've tried that they sold was one called Oranjeboom, I think from Holland. Don't know if they still sell it there, but whenever we looked for beers there we'd always look for that one first if they had it in stock.

I'd be willing to give Simpler Times a try, will be driving to our old neighborhood near a TJ in two weeks and will try to remember to stop by TJ's then and look for it. Thanks for the tip...
