What justifies the premium over the standard quietcomfort?

Be careful with these. I have had two pairs and both have issues with Teams meetings. Other people are always complaining that my mic fades in and out all the time. I exchanged a pair but the issue remains. My QC 35 and 45 do not have this issue. I will probably try out Gen2 now that those are out.

I have these and don't have any problems with teams (on a MacBook). Possibly it's due to the background noise cancellation setting in teams? Or possibly isn't properly setting your headphones into 'phone call mode' where the mic sensitivity is significantly increased for voice calls

If you're a vet or active military, you can pick up a Gen 2 Desert Gold on the Exchange for $327. I did...
If you've got an old pair of Bose headphones lying around that you no longer use, you can now trade them in towards the Ultra Gen 2s bring the cost (for Gen 2) down $150 to $299 as well. (SD Pro Tip: You could also go buy a beat up pair of QC15s off of eBay for $20 and then "trade" those in too).

Same price on TikTok Shop. YMMV, but your TT account may also have a coupon to apply during checkout to get it even cheaper.

These or Sony XM4/5/6? Are there newer or older generations in these too?

Sony headband has the reported issue of breaking, Bose creaks. Both models are last gen models.

Beyond that, both top notch (95%+) for noise cancelling across most reviews, so it comes down to fit, feel, and how it sounds to your ears.
Some prefer the Bose sound, some prefer the Sony. Nuances.
As for sound alone, sure, you can do better easily...as long as you didn't need noise cancelling or portability.
$1000 Audeze LCD-X, $3000 Cavalli tube amp, $5000+ top end USB DAC etc.
Something more portable? I'd say try the recently released Audio-Technica open-back models like the ATH-R70xa.

Have had these for a few months and there are some minor issues even if you get a good pair (creaking in the headband), but they sound incredible and the NC is as always legit.... wouldn't recommend these to work out in, but for most other uses they are incredible.
I'm looking for a pair of over the ear headphones for the gym. Anyone have recommendations?

Regular Quiet Comforts for the gym.....The Ultra's headband has a lot of creaking that is amplified into the earcup when running on a treadmill or any type of running/heavy walking. Maybe there are others, but definitely not the Ultras. It's a common problem that is all over the internet.
