Bought 2 of these last week for $200. SMART data said 0 power on hours. Not sure if legit or not. They went into raid arrays so they will die eventually

Only if you back it up. The GHD warranty is solid - they stand behind it and will ship you a replacement as long as you ship the bad one back at your expense...but keep in mind that these are used drives that have a lot of hours on them and can fail without warning (though that's true of any drive, even BNIB). Make sure you have redundancy, because losing 16tb of data can be painful.

I am confused by these comments? The seller description is rating a 5 year warranty, 0 bad sectors, and 0 power hours; why would this not be safe for a NAS?

Use preowned storage, get hacked like a boomer on Facebook.
Spoken like a true boomer lol. Use these drives, they're completely fine. Keep backups of important data. And say it with me, RAID is not backup.

The WD deal for 14tb with the chase 20% back came out a little cheaper price per tb, but involves shucking and questionable warranty. if I didn't already receive those, would've bought these.

I have ordered from them before. A couple years back i ordered 2 12TB Hitachi / WD drives from them. After about 6 months or so one of them started reporting a few bad blocks. I tried to message them through were i ordered the drives from (newegg) & they never responded. I then went directly to their website & messaged them & they quickly responded & replaced the drive no problem & both drives are still going strong.
So overall i was happy. So i'm in for 2 thanks. I was about to order the 2 26TB WD drives for $900. This saves me a bunch
I generally always get hitachi / WD drives but i've head toshiba before & haven't had any issues. I just steer clear of seagate drives.

This or the WD Ultrastar in terms of quality and reliability? This one is clearly better $/TB

While the seller is good, I wouldn't recommend these as reliable NAS storage. I bought two of them (WD Ultrastar 16TB, with $12/TB); one was DOA and the other failed after a couple of months, which GHD replaced within two weeks. The extensive amount of testing you need to do - just to make sure they're in good shape - takes days, not to mention the wasted time going back and forth with GHD! On top of that, you always have to stay on your toes because they might fail at any moment.
If you can get one dirt cheap (like $6–$8 per TB), they might be worth the hassle. However, for anything over $10 per TB, I'd rather spend a bit more ($14–$16 per TB) to get actual NAS drives like the WD Red/Gold, put them in my NAS, and forget about them.

To clarify the "0 power-on hours" claim: manufacturers generally wipe the SMART data during the refurbishment process (source: https://serverpartdeals.com/blogs...comparison), after which they all show 0 power on hours.

Finally, a friendly suggestion: be the drives new or used, if your data is important, follow the 3-2-1 backup rule!

Fair enough - I'm having a hard time finding any really decent deals on new NAS drives even during this week so the $/TB here is very tempting. The Red Plus deals are not screaming to me as I'd rather pay slightly more for the Pro and get 2+ years more of warranty

well they are definitely used. They reset the counter in the firmware, I wish they didnt do that. Just leave the counter to show us how many hours it really has.

Same I picked this month to look into changing out my HGST NAS drives that are 10 years old at this point. Looks like I picked a bad time, prices are crazy. Zero errors but they could go at any time now, 6 years of power on time. If they still made HGST I would get them again with the reliability this last ones gave me.
