Bought this when it was $30 from Walmart. Actually works very well.

Important to note that it's app only. There are no controls on the device other than a power button.

You do not need to pay subscription to use it unless you want wifi capability. It is free to use via the app/Bluetooth.

Overall it's pretty good but during a cook the app can struggle to refresh if you leave and come back to it so what I do is close out the app entirely and reopen and it has consistently connected after that. Not too bad of an issue but worth noting

these are great, easiest example is for meat- you're not boiling them, you're holding them at specific temps so that the proteins behave certain ways. e.g. 144°F chicken breast is more or less rare and safe to eat because it's been pasteurized, but the meat won't get stringy or tough because that's a side affect of being exposed to high heat.

great stuff- lots of kenji articles on serious eats about it. buying a couple of these to hand out as gifts, lol- annoying to have to use app to set it, but it's 20$ a pop which is less than aldi's cheapo SVs when they have them randomly.

You vacuum seal the food, seasonings and whatnot and then it slow cooks it all together without any loss of flavor or nutrients. If you do a piece of meat, you would typically sear it after cooking in the sous vide.

They do a good job because a lot of other cooking options cause your flavors to get watered down or cooked off.

Good price, but keep in mind that new users will need to pay a monthly $10 subscription for the full app. If you are grandfathered in, great.

Got one of these on the last deal. Picked up 2 for Christmas gifts. I'm new to sous vide, but I love mine. Works a charm

What can you do without the full app?

manually set temp or time (which you don't need to really do because anything not delicate, like say a beef roast, doesn't care if you cook it for 6 hours or 12 or 24).

fundamentally all the app does control-wise is let you punch in recipe's details, which you could have just done manually. sure, it has recipes tool but you can just google them or look up guides on serious eats which has kenji's articles that are fantastic.

this does not have all the bells and whistles, but it is an incredibly heap option for a very good device that would let someone get their toes wet with SV. already ordered 3 of these this morning for friends/relatives who i was on the fence for when it was ~35$ shipped via walmart awhile back. have this thing myself, and it's not my go to because you have to use the app to control it vs the touch/scrollwheel interfaces their other models have...but at 20$ shipped that's a steeeeal.

Why would you possibly need that? set the temperature, set a timer (preferably on your phone so you don't need to babysit), done. I really don't understand why Bluetooth and WIFI and an app enter the conversation with sous vide and trust me, I am a kitchen and tech gadget addict. I guess you could put veggies in the bath and then turn them on when leaving work? But again, Bluetooth seems to be the more common (and FREE in this case) in which you are limited to being home. I am wary of stuff like this with no actual hardware controls. What happens when the app flakes out or is no longer supported? A decent sous vide device will likely last you a long long time, I only use mine for steak typically, tried other stuff and wasn't impressed, even pork chops which I thought would be amazing since it is so easy to overcook pork with traditional methods.

Most of the HA crowd just dosent want 600 apps on their phone for every manufacturer that decides their product needs to be smart.

I got the original Anova Precision model 9 or 10 years ago and it's been rock solid. I don't really need a second one, but at 20 bucks I'm tempted to buy this as a back up. Or for those times when I want to make different things at two different temps.

This isn't something that comes up often, and when it does, I can just prepare them sequentially. So it's not a huge problem, but for $20, why not?

My only holdup is this not having physical controls like the original model, meaning once the app is no longer supported, it'll become a paperweight. But, again - 20 bucks, it's not a huge risk.

That's the thing. They don't need to. No one wants them. These kind of devices are better without them. But since this particular model does not have manual controls, being HA compatible would mean not having to download yet another useless app.
